Jed's 2019 Fall Tour rolls on to a new venue called "The Cave" which presents alot of mystery apparently and produces a show bristling with energy and electricity. Jed "eases into things" with the thoughtful "I Know There's Something" following it up with a dedication to his friend and songwriting partner Christine Lanfranco and one of the duo's collorations "Missing Us." It's a great version of the song with Jed keeping it fairly chill and then opening it up into a wicked jam featuring layered guitars and ambient piano. It leads into the contemplative "The 86" which although it's the "come down" tune from the jam, it produces it's own 18 minute jam which is rhytmic and upbeat starting out with a nice piano solo then soaring on Jed's guitar riffs with way out tones. It lands in the powerful emotive tune "Feel" which provides a nice crescendo. Jed ends the set with a really nice version of his instrumental "Doigter" referencing "a million stars over your heads" as Moondance Parx lights up the sky with shifting constellations. It features a great drum solo and builds to a big ending for the perfect first half closer. You can tell it was a good setbreak from the way Jed opens second set, taking the crowd through the "doorway" and launching into Phish's "Walls Of The Cave" on the piano. It's an ambitious attempt, having only been played by Jed five times in 540 shows. But it's all in good fun and he does a decent job with it and then busts it open into an awesome jam taking it out to nearly 30 minutes. It segues abruptly into a bouncy original called "Go Away" but it's only a brief distraction from jamming as he quickly settles back into another deep and echoing jam featuring soulful organ lines. It comes to a screeching halt and the folksy "All The Same" rises from the pause with Jed whistling a tune. "Can you guys whistle?" he asks. Soon everyone in the room was whistling along. It's another great version of a Jed original that usually flies under the radar. Jed is in rare form at this show, and he stops to reflect on time being irrelevent at the moment before launching into a fantastic version of his forlorn love song "It Ain't Living" complete with self-backup on vocals and a rocking end solo. It feels like he's going to go into another killer jam, but alas he shifts abruptly into the bluegrass song "Old Home Place" often played by Phish. It's an odd choice for the venue, but still a fun upbeat way to end the set. Jed comes back for a two song encore featuring the Robert Hunter dedication of the evening with "Black Muddy River" and the high-octane Phish-strumental "First Tube," a favorite of Moonie's. This is a really great show with fantastic energy and great music. Jed and Moonie were in perfect sync the whole way through and there's an emotional vibe throughout. THe show features several possible GOAT (greatest of all time) versions of Jed originals including "Doigter," "It Ain't Living" and "All The Same" along with some fantastic jams in "Missing Us," "The 86" and "Go Away." Phish fans will want to check out the 28 minute WOTC and the "First Tube" ender. Enjoy!
