JLB is back for Fall 2019 with a three show Residency at The Goat in Secondlife! This is the first show of the run, and you can tell the band is raring to go, but you'd never know it was six months since their last show! They open the festivities with a dedication to youth climate advocate Greta Thurnberg, the apropos "Ozone Blues" about a world overheated to the bring of extinction. It heats up quickly at the Jedstead, but the band reels it back for a nice mellow introduction to "Listen To The Angels," which heats right back up in the middle and leads into the first blazing jam of the night. It features an "Avenu Malkenu" tease from Jed for the Rosh Hashanah crowd, before he transitions into the pop rocker "Still In Luv With U," with a nice little extended jam at the end. The first cover song of the evening is up next, the moody "Ghost" from Phish, which includes a nice Doors tease from Jed during the guitar solo and produces the second lengthy jam of the evening. It features some some nice piano and organ work from Mark Gutenplan, and some fantastic interplay between Jed on lead and K-Man on the bass. Of course Pete Martine keeps it all on track from the kit (which incidentally is in the same room as the others at the Jedstead for the first time ever!). The jam slides effortlessly in the Robert Hunter song "Loser" sung powerfully by Mr. Kaufman. The set has a lot left in it, with a bouncy "Brother Love" generating one more jam in the set before a tight transition into "Sugar Pop" for a perfect close to a rockin' first half. Second set opens with a nice slow jam into the JLB classic "Victim of the Rhythm," which launches the second set with super high energy, including a solo section with Jed on the theramin. The consistent jam vehicle doesn't disappoint here, with the longest jam of the night following. It's a rocker that takes flight before landing in the "The Freeze." The band doesn't hold back on it. The Mark Gutenplan travelogue is up next and it's a fun road trip that leads into unexpected jam territory with one final improv of the night, a rhythmic and upbeat jam that elevates the set to its final peak before heading down the other side. The way down features a cover of Robert Palmer's "Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley," and the always high energy closer "Used To Feel Good." The band tacks on one more Robert Hunter tribute, closing out the night with "Deal." This is a fantastic show from a band you might expect to be rusty. There's a couple bumps in the road, but rest assured JLB was ready to rock and they'll take you on an action-packed jamventure with this one if you give it a ride. Enjoy!
