View NotesPlayers: Charles Atkins - keyboards and vocals The Blues Boys Larry Laseur - harmonica, backup vocals, vocals # Harty Wiedemann - guitar, vocals $ Tom Henning - guitar w/ Matt Thibeault - bass & RC Leonard - drums Craig Crofton - sax on So Long Darn nice show here. The overall mix has the same issue as the previous night with guitars mixed way low but this recording has some life to it. Vocals are real good, rhythm section is solid, harmonica floats around with a ghostly sound. Other than the holes left where the guitar solos would go, and a few songs where Charles switches to a too-hot organ (trks 10,17, 30), there's a lot to like. Altho I usually skip over tunes where Harty sings, even his 2 tunes are good with stong backup vocals by Charles and Larry and lots of space for the Boys to play around. Great to hear the practice plaything Sit In. No idea who Craig Crofton is but his sax really adds to the swing of So Long. And Lovelight - all 11 minutes - woo-hoo! Bullwinkles is probably the most famous bar on the college strip, and still going strong. Steve the manager (now owner) would give us an occasional night inside (if the college was closed and kids gone) but usually the band played outside "Friday Happy Hour" down in the Beer Garden. Brutal gigs in the late afternoon heat and humidity - fav quote from Tom: Hot sun, black guitar <>. Didn't record any of the beer garden shows as there was never time or space, and always the threat of rain. Inside was much better with the band set up in a corner, tight, easy to hear. No doubt the stage volume was pretty high which explains the lack of guitars thru the soundboard, but overall it was a good night for Charles and the Boys. [update Sept] Drawing of Charles is by Grahound who would hang out at Bullwinkles around that time. From a scan I made back then, it ended up on posters, cassette covers, t-shirts, and now the internet. The scan of the fan is a reminder of all the Friday afternoons out in the beer garden. June 2009 Now July (Finally uploaded Oct 10) - still don't have internet connection for uploads; maybe soon. Working on the V89 benefit at Dave's CC Club - great show, great tape, lots of guests. Enjoy! SCopeland
