View NotesHighlights: tracks 7, 9, 13-14, 16, 21 Players: Charles Atkins - keyboards and vocals The Blues Boys Larry Laseur - harmonica Harty Wiedemann - guitar Tom Henning - guitar with Matt Thibeault - bass & RC - drums Looking at the session sheet, it says this practice started at noon-thirty, then notes 1PM and 3:00, and with 10 more songs after that, we must have gone till 4 or 5. Charles starts out with a new song "God Blest our Love" - a song he was to sing to his bride Mary on their wedding day. Charles on the Rhodes; the Boys give it a shot on take 2. Maryann is Tom's song - a new one and it will stick in your head. Matt and RC must have settled in at some point as I believe they're playing on Come Back Baby altho I don't quite hear them. Then the mix gets better and Little Run-around has a nice swing to it followed by a jump up to I Need a Break. one POP! That ends side A. Cold Sweat - don't know who started it but Matt sure hits the bottom groove, RC too. Lot of guitar solo (if that's your thing), and who says Charles can't sing in that pitch. Onward to St Louie Blues -- Charles is talking thru the chords mostly. If you want to learn the song - track 12. Sounds like the Boys are taking a break so Charles gets in a soulful solo on track 13. Me or someone says something about sounding like People Get Ready - and here comes a snippet of it. Check out Charles as it ends, "Yeah - You're making me feel something". So guess what - we have an earlier version of the Florida Song. Forget what I wrote on 3-11-93; my precious notes failed me again :) Good second take here but a bit slower than the powerful 3-11 versions. Check after the end when Charles goes off. Notes has Harty singing 2 of his tunes next - dang, musta fergot to hit the record button. Track 17 is probably the 3rd take on All Around the World, followed by Next Time You See Me. Matt is getting some good bass bombs in, then it sounds like he starts She Ain't Giving it Up. This take is a bit rough but they're having fun and we know Charles will keep at it till everyone is gets it right, altho Harty is being a bit awkward at first. Practice closes with Charles, solo on the Rhodes, and another new song - Don't Leave Me in the Dark and that's Larry getting "profuse" at the end :) as always quick to pick up new stuff. June 08 I'll try to post some more sessions soon. 3 more are digitized already, just need parsing and all. About 6 more masters and 6 earlier 1-off copies and that will be it for the Practice Sessions. Enjoy! SCopeland
