Highlights: tracks 2 or 3 & 11 Players: Charles Atkins - keyboards and vocals The Blues Boys Larry Laseur - harmonica, backup vocals Harty Wiedemann - guitar Tom Henning - guitar with Matt Thibeault - bass & RC - drums guest guitar - Chuck Barrows Listening back to this, at first I had no idea who Chuck was. Still don't. He solos on a couple songs but his amp was not miced so his playing does not stand out. Tonight's tape starts (late) with Moving On; there may have been other songs before this but these earlier notes, before I got serious about recording the sessions, are not as complete as later on. The mix is a bit off at first as the boys settle in but gets much better as they warm up and adjust to the room. My amateur approach to mixing was to get everyone who had a mic up to levels, then set that sound to the room, let the band get comfortable, and leave it alone. Well except for Charles; so dynamic you had to stay on his channels. Track 2 - Don't Get Around Much Anymore is a slow starter but hits a groove once the rhythm section picks it up. Track 3 is even better but someone (ahem) really screwed the tape start. Got Me Running follows with Larry singing along with Charles, something Larry really enjoyed. Track 5 is another standard, Kansas City, but there's some tape distortion as the signal got too hot. Not that I am complaining when Matt the young bass player thumps it hard. Rock Me Baby is up next then it's off to the original New Train that they had been working on for a month or so. Lots of energy now, and check out Charles at the end of track 8 going "Woo-hooo"! The tape ends with a long long version of I Got a Woman. Good mix, lots of bass and the drums are strong. This is pretty much like what you get live - towards the end Charles standing up & rockin', pounding the keys and taking the song and his band as far as he could go. Sept 2008 iTunes 8 sucks. I run all these files thru iTunes to convert 2822 bit aiff to 1411 wav. Sure do not like how Apple has removed the checkbox for NOT putting track number on the track name. There's enough renaming and tweaking to get this from tape to Mac to LMA without having to twiddle with such inane nonsense as deleting track number from the track name. Not having an easy option, not having a choice, it is so Windows of Apple. They also moved the option for defining file format from the advanced tab where it made sense to the general tab under "import settings". Anyways - enjoy! SCopeland
