Sick Bits Vol. 21a - SBD/AUD Matrix of 2 previously circulating sources: SBD (shnid=212) + AUD (shnid=14193).
Taper Notes:
View NotesSource: Matrix (SBD/AUD mix): SBD: (shnid=212) - via Darrin Sacks Lineage: MR>C>DAT2>CDR3>EAC>SHN AUD: (shnid=14193) - via Noah Weiner(encoding) via Mark Cohen(A/D xfer) AudMC > DAT > WAV > SHN Recorded by Jerry Moore about 15 rows from the stage on center axis with 2 hand held AKG D-1000E mics > Sony 152 deck. Maxell UD-120 cassettes, with Dolby B ON. Transfer/Editing: Both sources were converted to WAV > Sony Vegas 5 > WAV > CD Wave > FLAC 16 (level 8) Matrixed by Chris Chappell [email protected] 2-15-07 __________________________________________________ Since the second set fits on one disc, I would put the tuning + Playin' by themselves on disc 2. Tracks are named by set as opposed to disc as there are many media options now for output. ____________________________________________________________ General Notes: Both nights at the Miami Jai-Alai Fronton are excellent shows in their own right, following closely on the heels of the amazing 6-16 and 6-18 shows, all part of a short 8 show summer run. This Saturday night show, often overshadowed by the unique show the following night, is crackling with energy, and features an amazing China>Rider, a 28+ minute Playin', and the 9th Scarlet ever. As a foreshadow of the Healy weirdness to follow the next night, there is a strange electronic effect at the beginning of Greatest Story - the first time I have heard this type of effect used at a Dead show. Healy must have had a new toy. The SBD mix is somewhat low in terms Garcia's guitar due to his loud stage volume. Thus, when coupled with the excellent Jerry Moore AUD, which is predominated by Garcia, the matrix really works well with everyone represented and balanced. Many thanks to Jerry Moore for recording the AUD, and to Mark Cohen for the transfer, and to Noah Weiner for converting it to shn. Thanks to Darrin Sacks for the SBD source. Thanks to Bill Zormeir (AKA Zman) for the excellent artwork. Enjoy! -Chappy ____________________________________________________________ Editing Notes: - Pitch/Synch Both sources were very close in pitch, the SBD being the closest to A=440. I synched the AUD to the SBD and the AUD had to be pitched up only 4 to 6 cents. The alt. SBD which provides the encore had to be pitched up 50 cents and was treated with some light NR due to excessive hiss from multi-gen analog transfers. - Sonic Quality/Matrix ratio No EQ was applied to either of the two sources. I applied very sparingly Waves L2 (limiter) to the master 2 buss to keep things contained, the levels rarely hitting zero, thus the limiting is quite scarce. All I was trying to do here is to add some dimension to the SBD by using the ambience of the AUD. The result is a lively but clear recording, hopefully close to how it sounded at the show. If I had to guess the SBD/AUD ratio would be somewhere between 3:1 and 2:1. Note that Jerry's presence in the matrix mix is enhanced greatly from the AUD due to his loud stage volume. - Edits The following are places where the SBD and AUD had splices, holes or incomplete coverage in reference to the final matrix timeline. SBD: s1t01 (0:00 - 2:31) - missing (tuning) s1t04 (5:33 - 6:26) - missing (tuning) s1t06 (5:30 - 6:21) - missing (tuning) s1t07 (6:45 - 8:10) - missing (tuning) s1t07 (8:16 - 8:45) - missing (tuning) s1t08 (4:38 - 5:11) - missing (tuning) s1t09 (4:37 - 6:21) - missing (tuning) s1t10 (3:21 - 4:08) - missing (tuning) s1t11 (7:03 - 8:26) - missing (tuning) s1t12 (3:18 - 4:17) - missing (tuning) s1t13>14 (5:20 - 1:04) - missing (tuning) s1t15 (9:21:58 - 9:21:65) - missing s1t15 (28:22 - 28:42) - missing (crowd) s1t15 (8:16 - 8:45) - missing (tuning) s2t01 (0:00 - 1:17) - missing (tuning) s2t03 (5:02 - 6:48) - missing (tuning) s2t04 (3:05 - 5:02) - missing (tuning) s2t05 (6:08 - 6:31) - missing (tuning) s2t06 (4:35 - 6:15) - missing (tuning) s2t08 (9:23 - 9:37) - missing s2t09 (8:41 - 11:17) - missing (tuning) s2t10 - missing all - supplied by alt. SBD AUD: s2t07 (12:56 - 13:03) - missing Full coverage is achieved, and almost all the missing elements from the SBD are tuning/crowd. __________

Thanks, Wiz AUD Patches:AudMC > DAT Recorded by Jerry Moore about 15 rows from the stage on center axis with 2 hand held AKG D-1000E mics > Sony 152 deck. Maxell UD-120 cassettes, with Dolby B ON. Analog > DAT transfer by Mark Cohen, December 2002 DAT > SHN/CD by Noah Weiner ([email protected]) December, 2002 Editing and Mastering by The Wizard - [email protected] Both the Audience and the Soundboard are available from The Owen Brothers Vault. This was a nice SBD recording with only minor issues. Most tunings were cut. These were patched from the AUD source where available. A light Continuous Noise filter was used to minimize tape hiss. The sound was a bit flat so equalization was used to bring up the top and bottom ends a bit. Other specific issues corrected: The old SBD patch in Playin' was cleaned up and adjusted to better match the rest. Mix was bad on Promised Land on both SBD and AUD - couldn't fix that! All AUD patches were matched up as well as possible through EQ, Noise reduction and gain adjustments. Misc. loud handclaps, pops and other anomalies were corrected. All editing done with Diamond Cut DC6 software.

View NotesThis is a new master created with the original shn #105825 files. It seems like the drums were not loud enough in the Wall this night. Or it could be the tapers location in the hall. I kind of get the impression that the taper was sitting close and on the left side of the audience in front of Jerry with most of the band sound coming from the right. I have equal energy in both channels but it still leans a bit to the right. For this I worked on the hi-res files but only saved as cd ready. 44.1 16 bit Work done in ProTools LE with final eq tweaks in ocenaudio. The original files have the mids around 400 to 500 Hz louder than everything else. Here I've brought out the low and high end more. The flac files are tagged. Much thanks to Jerry Moore and those who have worked to make this music available. acetboy 2019-12-07
