Set 3 Source: soundboard segment from a trade, no lineage is available; audience portion Source: 2 Sennheiser MKH404tu > Sony D6 w/ Dolby C;
Lineage:
Nakamichi CR3A w/ Dolby B > Audigy 4 pro @ 16-44 > NERO > EAC > WAVE > Adobe Audition (combine tracks and remove small gaps from SBE errors) iZotope RX4 advanced (fix dropouts, remove loud clapping, increase volume, reduced bass in places) > CD Wave > TLH (flac level 8)
Taper Notes:
View NotesApplause sections on the audience recording were shortened to remove the hurricane of noise between songs. The soundboard section came already edited during these segments. Soundboard source was from 3 trade CDR's sent to me many years ago. I did some work on it to clean up any defects including small dropouts and loud pops/tics. The Grateful Dead "alone" is now available on the "One From The Vault" series so the Dead's set is omitted here. Leaving this Bob Dylan set with the Grateful Dead backing him unreleased. The soundboard cuts off as "Ballad Of A Thin Man" started so I have spliced on my audience recording to complete the show. Not a super recording as my levels were a bit too high for a couple songs so there is some distortion and although not painful it is there. Phil really overpowered my levels and "Gotta Serve Somebody" got the worst of it. Although you see professional microphones as the source they were a bitch to use with the long cables in that aggressive crowd. Prefer to record with a microphone spread of 5-10 feet but that was not going to happen this time. Some friends tried to run a block to keep people from tangling themselves in those cables as they were pushing their way to the front. We were somewhat close (maybe 100-150 feet) and the crowd was so tight it was difficult to be trying to do anything much less be able to monitor levels. As soon as Bob came on the crowd became like a herd of Elephants running up our backs and it pushed us much closer to the stage. By the end of the show we were about 50 feet closer to the stage and I was worn out from holding both microphones and the tape deck. The microphones did get pulled out after "Ballad Of A Thin Man". Fixed that but missed the first 1 1/2 seconds of "Rainy Day Women 12 & 35" so a clip was patched in from a couple nights earlier in Oakland to create a simulated start. This is where the levels got bumped up somehow. By "All Along The Watchtower" my recording levels are back to being correct. For the encore Bob stands back and plays rhythm guitar during "Touch Of Grey" but returns to the microphone for "Knockin On Heavens Door". The applause between songs was just spliced out for the most part to remove all the shuffling and screaming sounds. A herculean effort was applied to the music to reduce the audience noises and it helped a lot as you will hear (or not hear actually). The last few seconds of "Knockiní On Heavenís Door" is without the clapping removed and gives you an idea how loud the crowd was. Anyhow I didn't get the results I hoped for on this recording but it still sounds pretty good and completes the show. And there is always the first disc which is a beautiful soundboard recording. Taper Notes:
View NotesIt appears the tapers were able to get only a single mic into the concert (it was a no-taping show), they're heard discussing that between songs. However, they did manage to capture a decent mix from the repeater array; with good bass, clear vocals, and without a lot of stadium echo or crowd noise. The tapers can also be heard mic-checking before Tons of Steel, Shakedown, and Looks Like Rain. Note: small FLAC file size is due to mono WAV data. Patches from ID-98214 were mixed down to mono and added as follows: - Iko 0:00 > 0:18 - Masterpiece 3:04 > 3:22 - Promised Land 0:00 > 0:06 - crowd after Promised Land 4:13 > 4:21 - Space 4:31 > 4:37 - Chimes of Freedom 5:28 > 5:33 - Touch of Grey 0:00 > 0:18 CDR Burning: Each set on a disc with Encores on end of Disc One.
