View NotesIt's Jammin Jed's Halloween of Mystery!! This is Jed's twelfth annual Halloween event and it's always a night full of music and fun. This year's theme was "Mystery" and the crowd showed up in detective and mystery related costumes including the Pink Panther, characters from Clue and Scooby Doo, Sam Spade and Nick Fury types and many more! The event does present an odd mystery itself, as the JLB was supposed to join Jed for this show, but they mysteriously disappear at the hands of kidnappers whose ransom notes shows up throughout the night. Alas, the band is never rescued and Jed is forced to perform the entire concert alone. He opens the festivities with "One And..." paired with it's usual companion "Ride With The Devil." It sets a good tone considering the crime oriented theme of the evening. After revealing that the band has been kidnapped, Jed carries on with "Hurtful Things," another appropriate tune in light of the evil doings going on. The somber "Cold Dark Winter" follows, with an intensity that seems to reflect the mood well. Things get jammy next with the Halloween themed Phish cover "Ghost" which extends into a twenty minute jam that features some cool synth leads and fiery guitar riffs over a driving rhythm. A brief ambient come down segues into Jed's eerily rhythmic "Multiply." After a brief recap of Halloweens gone by, Jed launches into "The 86," which as always provides a canvas for an amazing guitar solo that builds to an awesome climax. The down east ghost ditty "Geneva Sue" wraps up the first frame. After receiving the kidnapper's ransom demands and flatly refusing to negotiate, Jed kicks off the second set with a great version of the powerful instrumental "Valley Of The Saints," which he opens up into a lengthy multi-faceted improv jam with killer guitar work over an up tempo backbeat. It slides ever so smoothly into another Phish Halloween themed cover of "Wolfman's Brother," which also extends into a nice jam featuring a killer "Frankenstein" tease from Jed. "Black Molly," the first of two GuRGLe era tunes in the set surfaces next, followed by one of Jed's newer tunes, a rocker called "Send Me A Package." The crowd pleaser "Throw It Down The Hill" comes next, with the second GuRGLe tune of the night hot on its heels, the epic Jed collaboration with Robert Varkony called "Devil And The Deep Blue Sea." It's a powerful way to close the set. After a final message from the kidnappers, Jed rolls out the obligatory "Pumpkin Song" to put an exclamation point on the evening. This was yet another super fun Halloween event from Jammin Jed, and despite the band being kidnapped, the solo effort from Jed results in a super hot show full of great songs and outstanding jams. Standouts are the first set "Ghost" jam and "The 86," and the second set "VOTS" and "Wolfmans" combo...but the whole show is well worth a listen. Enjoy!
