View NotesThe Jed Luckless 2021 Winter Tour makes a long overdue return to the virtual Hotel Chelsea in Secondlife! The last visit was in November 2019, so the energy was bristling with anticipation as Jed returned to this classic venue. This visit is a bit different though, since Jed plays on the Hotel rooftop for the first time, which allows Moondance Parx to join in the fun and light up the skies over virtual NYC!
Being in New York City must have inspired Jed to revisit his youth, because he opens the show with a four song run of tunes from the GuRGLe era, which he played with his band GuRGLe in the 90's in NY. The first three songs are solo debuts for Jed, starting with the surf-rock instrumental GuRGLe Shuffle, followed by the Robert Varkony penned blueser "Wheelbarrow Blues" and Jed's introspective pop tune "Look Away." The fourth song is "Friendly Burial," the epic wartime rocker which features a powerful mid section. It's a real treat hearing these old songs get the Jed treatment. He moves onto more typical fare next, with "Victim Of The Rhythm," one of only a few repeats on the tour, but understandably repeated here since the song has it origins at the Hotel Chelsea. The first nice jam of the night extends and connects it to an original debut of a somewhat somber song called "Cold, Dark Winter." It's back to GuRGLe for the set closer, the sarcastically charged and rarely played "So Much For O.J."
Second set opens with yet another solo debut by Jed, but this one goes back even further to his high school band "Jack In The Mist," and one of his earliest songs called "Spikes In The Rock." It's an odd, barely lyrical song with some disjointed movements, but it's got some great energy and Jed opens it up into a nice long improv jam that features some trippy guitar parts and a nice synth solo. It shifts into a cool theramin and feedback driven segment before transitioning into another debut. This one also goes back to Jed's high school days and it's a lament on love called "Worthless Emotion." The Neil Young style guitar intro is cool, and the lyrics tell a compelling tale of young lust. The first cover song of the night appears next with moe.'s "Happy Hour Hero," and another nice long jam with fast paced rhythm and ripping guitar. It segues into another cover to close the set, the appropriate String Cheese Incident song "Hotel Window." The encore slot has been filled with Phish songs all tour, and tonight's is the bouncy "Kill Devil Falls," but Jed tacks on one more song after it, playing "Let It Be" as a nod to the Beatles famous rooftop show.
This is a really unqiue and special show featuring no less than six song debuts, many from Jed's formative years and his time in the band GuRGLe. It also features a few great jams, and a couple of Jed's favorite covers to play, along with a Beatles nod at the end. One of the funnest shows on the tour! Enjoy!
