View NotesThe Jed Luckless 2021 Winter Tour continues with show #5 and a first time appearance at Surfside Hideaway in Secondlife! Jed and Moonie made the long drive overnight for an early show, and as always delivered two sets of tasty music and spectacular lights on a day worth celebrating!
Jed opens the show appropriately with "The Story of Shirtless Joe" and a nod to the inauguration of Joe Biden that occured earlier in the day. There's a definite Surfside theme in play too, which becomes immediately apparent with the second slot "Catfish Friend." Jed's bouncy instrumental "The Hairdresser" is up next, followed in the clean-up position by a heavy hitting version of "The 86" which hits the open sea with an extended solo portion that glides effortlessly into the Beatles "Dear Prudence." It's back to the sea shanty's next with "Geneva Sue," followed by a serious set closing dedication of the poignant Jed composition "Second Hand Smile" to his daddy.
Second set continues the seaside theme with its opener "Time And Tide," which hits the open waters for a journey through an improv jam that features synth and piano leads from Jed along with soaring guitar riffs. The jam settles into a nice ambience over which emerges an instrumental treatment of "Amazgin Grace" before it crescendos into Jed's pop-rocker "Still In Luv With U." When its all over it's about 25 minutes of non-stop music to open the set. But the jams keep coming with the on-theme "Lightship" up next which produces the longest jam of the night, a funky rhythmic improv featuring jazzy piano and some odd synthesizer effects. At about the three quarter mark it shifts to a major key with fiery guitar leads before crash landing on "Oh My Star," Jed's space-age love song. It's not the best version of this beautiful song, as Jed has busted a string and is struggling with his instrument. Despite this, he carries on with his backup guitar and delivers the blueser "Roll Over" and the bluegrassy "Where The Mountains Meet The Sea" to close out the second frame. The obligatory Phish encore seems perfect on this day, the uplifting and hopeful "Everything's Right."
This is a fun show at a new venue on an historic day with a great surfside themed setlist, a couple exceptional jams and an overall optimism and joie de vivre despite a broken string and some tuning issues. Definitely worth a listen for the highlights: The 86 into Prudence, the Amazing Grace tease in Time And Tide, and the funky Lightship jam. Enjoy!
