View NotesA poor attempt in my humble opinion at documenting the show, but there are some factors which must be mentioned.Happy Trails is (was) a SHITHOLE. The acoustics were terrible. The atmosphere was terrible. It was a college shithole bar where people came to party, get smashed, hook up with chicks and get laid. The music was almost background noise atHappy Trails. Over the years, I figured out how to get a decent recording out of the place. But at the time, I was a rookie. First of all, this was mixed by a guy named Jamie Jamison, who flat out REFUSED to let me patch out of the soundboard. For this gig, I was unprepared. So Pete let me borrow a few mics they had floating around in their van. (Probably Shure vocal mics if memory serves me right, but I'm not sure.) I recorded onto a SONY D-5 deck, and recorded to Maxell XL-II's, right from the table that I was sitting at, which I had dragged to the back wall next to the soundboard. These tapes have sat unplayed since the day I made them. I've never had any desire to listen to the show ever again, until now. Amazingly enough, the band was trying interesting stuff. They did a lot of seguing of songs, which was unusual for 1996. There were also rarities sprinkled around, mainly an actual attempt to play Freebird (which crowds always chanted for, for some reason) and the Peter Gunn Theme in Sights. Also the percussion jam with Ed Drohan (who was the drummer for the band Swingset at the time) which I failed to notate on the original tape j-cards, but realized when working on this recording. It amazed me how much tape hiss crept in, dispite the fact that these masters were never played, since the day they were made. (Goes to show you what age can do to an analog recording. I'm sure the crappy mics/acoustics played a part as well.) So here it is, warts in all. I can absolutely assure you that there is no other recording of this show in existance.
