Here's a Jed outlier from 2016 featuring two sets performed on the same day in two different locations. Set One was an open mic at Feed A Smile, and Set Two was a secret set later that day at DarkStar. First set is short, but second set makes up for it with a Phish heavy setlist, some serious jams and rare Grateful Dead cover. Set One opens slowly with Jed "unprepared" for the open mic format. After all two or three songs for Jed could be an hour. It ends up being five songs since no one else wanted the mic, and it's an all original set opening with the rocker "Victim of the Rhythm" and a lengthy jam right off the bat that probably would have gotten him pulled off the stage anywhere else. But the crowd seems to enjoy it and Jed follows the jam with "Far Gone Blues." He's ready to quit at that point, but continues on with the venue appropriate ballad "Smile Forever," the French instrumental "Doigter" and the blue-grassy "Used To Feel Good." It's a fun little set, but you can see why Jed wanted to play another set later. Second set took place later that day at DarkSstar and unlike the early set, this one is heavy on cover tunes, and clocks in at almost two hours. It starts off with some Blues Brothers fun and "Everybody Needs Somebody," but things get serious quick as Jed moves into one of several long jams in the set. It sildes effortlessly into the Phish song "Free" which Jed delivers nicely as a solo act, with multiple layers and sweet ambience to the jam portion. Jed gently shifts to a minor key to ease into one of the few originals in the set, the solemn "Listen To The Angels," which also features a powerful solo section with drums. It's back to cover tunes next with a rare cover of the Grateful Dead's "Estimated Prophet" (the first time Jed had played the tune since his epic and infamous "Estimated" Spell Fest show in December of 2015). "Estimated" spawn the longest jam of the evening, featuring boomy bass, a funky back beat and some groovy keys. The only other original of the night comes next, actually two originals, the sibling songs "One And..." and "Ride With The Devil." You'd think the set would be about over at this point, but there's alot more still to come! For some reason (maybe Phish summer tour?) Jed shifts gears into "Run Like An Antelope" kicking off a mini-Phish set that's nearly an hour long. "Antelope" is fun rarity to hear from Jed, and he follows it with "46 Days" and a smokin jam that provides inklings of what lies in the future for the song (see Jed's 5/21/19 show at Feed A Smile!). The "46 Days" jam teases a little Bob Marley before it segues into "Light." Jed's cover of the Phish jam vehicle suffers a few brown outs before launching into an electric jam that dissolves into the Page McConnel favorite "Strange Design." The set closes with the peppy "Poor Heart." This is an intersting show with two very different sets, some classic Jed songs, a few really nice jams and plenty of chum for the Phans! Enjoy!
