remaster of shn #94604 audience recording by Reinhart Hohlwein
Taper Notes:
View NotesThis is a remaster of shn #94604. I re-patched Not Fade Away with an audience recording. The source of the patch is shn #102076. Thanks to those who shared it. Thanks to the taper and the MOTB people and all who bring this stuff to share. All of the work I do is in ocenaudio and Harrison Mixbus. Everything I do is basically about levels. Keeping them the same in both channels throughout the frequency range. When I speak of levels I mean RMS levels. Average levels. I also tighten up phase issues when needed. Clear up any gaps that may be found. If original files are high res, I have done most of the work at the higher sample frequency and bit depths. Then towards the end I've converted to 44.1 16 bit. About the screen grabs: One can not see everything I do in these images but it shows something about how the audio has changed between before and after. If I'm working from high res files the before FFT and Spectral images look quite a bit different inherently. But you can still see how they differ otherwise. acetboy 2023-10-22

Nakamichi CR3A w/ Dolby > Audigy 4 Pro @ 24/44.1 > Editing with NERO > Tracked With CD Wave > Flac (level 8)
Taper Notes:
View NotesFifty-Nine distracting ôout of syncö claps deleted on disc 1 track 4. The tape was flipped during Olin Arageed and the two pieces were spliced together (disc 1 track 4 at 17:00). A microphone became unplugged during Olin Arageed and a psudo stereo mix was created (disc 1 track 4 from 18:45 to 19:30). A piece of applause from an earlier track has been tacked onto the applause after New Minglewood Blues (disc 1 track 9 from 4:50 to 5:24). The tape was again flipped during Fire On The Mountain . To fill in the missing section 12 seconds from an alternate source recorded by Reinhart Hohlwein was inserted (disc 2 track 6 from 11:35 to 11:47). Finally the last tape flip is during Not Fade Away (disc 3 track 6 at 0:36). These breaks were spliced together with NERO wave editor. NERO wave editor was also used to make volume adjustments and to surgically remove distracting ôclapsö one at a time. Finally the FLAC conversion was performed at level 8. As a note, the Sony ecm-280 cardiod microphone specification page describes the frequency response as 30 to 18KHz. No Eq or Noise reduction used. There is a slight fluttering noise in the master cassettes during the quieter sections. Thanks to John Musgrave for the use of his recording equipment. Mike Martin September 2009

Taper Notes:
View Notes* with Hamza el Din & with Lee Oskar # with John Cippolina Notes: I assume there are better audience recordings of this show, but I got tired of waiting for one of them to appear. This was recorded by the same crew that did the recent seeds of the 01/07/78 San Diego show and the 01/11/78 LA show. I just love the sound of Cipollina on this recording, so I'm cuttin' it loose. If you got a better, bring it on. The sound is a little distant and quiet at the beginning, but it gets better as the show goes on. It was hard to hit a good balance between the delicate, quiet parts and the ragingly hot parts, but I did my best. You can hear a bit of noise in the really quiet parts due to the analog generations. There are flaws. The deck was stopped or paused between many songs, which accounts for some of the odd little tuning/crowd tracks. I tried to clean these up a bit, but I didn't want to get into a lot of fancy editing just for that. Plus, I think that fewer crossfades might make it easier in case somebody out there wants to have a crack at a matrix (HINT, HINT). Ollin Arageed cuts in, I don't know how much is missing. There's a cut in Ollin Arageed at about 11:18. I left it alone. The sound goes monaural in Ollin Arageed @ about 13:15 though 14:00 due to a temporary silence in the right channel. There was a brutal tape flip at about 30 seconds into Not Fade Away. I did a crossfade to minimize the pain.
