View NotesIn honor of the upcoming 34th anniversary of one of my favorite Dead shows, here is an odd but worthy little item. This tape came to me in about 1983. The source was a cassette of the (partial) first set of this colossal Dead show, made from the monitor mixing board, as opposed to the main soundboard -- or so the story goes. Unfortunately, most of the songs were severely cut and incomplete. This version includes all of the complete songs from this particular source, plus "China Cat" (which does have a nasty cut, but at the time, the only circulating source was the famous Donn Amick audience recording, which lacked the "China Cat," so this was a big bonus when it came along). It's a bit of a hodge-podge of tunes, but still worthwhile in my opinion. Some years later, the superb Betty Board version of this show appeared, which is a beautiful soundboard recording, and a wonderful complement to the very nice audience tape which had circulated for many years. It was greeted ecstatically, especially in these parts. It did have a couple of minor flaws, however. The good news is that this version cures some of those problems! First, some general comments: The sound on this one clearly is not as clean as the Betty Board. There are a couple of analog generations, and if you listen closely during the quiet passages, you can hear some hiss. Otherwise, it has a nice full sound. The stereo image sounds slightly different to me compared to the Betty Board, but I could be wrong. Track fades were on my source tape. The Betty Board, for all its clarity and length, has a couple of problems. First, there is some periodic static or distortion in the left channel throughout the first set. All the tracks that comprise this seed are static-free! If you've ever wanted to hear this sublime Bird Song without the static, this one's for you! I've included samples from the Betty Board and this version for comparison purposes. Other neat features: The Race Is On appears in its entirety (the first 20 seconds or so are missing on the Betty Board, which was skillfully patched with the audience recording on the most recent seed of the BB soundboard). Likewise, there's a gap in the Betty Board recording during "I Know You Rider," which was nicely patched with the aud. on the composite seed. This version is uncut. And on the downside, there's a little bit missing from the beginning of "Looks Like Rain." Hope y'all enjoy it! Check out the samples. And by the way, if anyone out there has a lower-gen version, bring it on!

Matrix by Hunter Seamons using Final Cut Pro (SHN & FLAC>AIFF>Final Cut>WAV>FLAC) June 21, 2008 Notes: 1) There is occasional static, particularly during the earlier portion of set 1. 2) AUD cuts during songs are as follows: 1. Bertha (Not used for matrixing due to a poor mono sound) 2. Bird Song (8 patches throughout; see note #4) 3. The Race is On (0:01-0:23; see note #4) 4. China Cat Sunflower (entire song) 5. I Know You Rider (2:01 - 3:12; see note #4) 6. Playing in the Band (14:38-15:01) 7. El Paso (entire song) 8. Nobody's Fault But Mine Jam (1:56-2:34) 9. Sugar Magnolia (3:23-4:58) 3) Because the shnid=85957 SBD patches sounded "not so good" with the AUD, and fluctuated in speed from the PCM source, no matrixing was done with the 85957 SBD patches. (Be very patient with the 16 warbly transitions in Bird Song. Such a shame for one of the best Bird Songs ever - surely the best of '73.) 4) Seemingly, the AUD opens up more for Mexicali Blues onward - more field range? - wherein the matrix becomes optimal, yet it seems to get even more optimal as the show progresses. (Dead shows can have that tendency.) 5) There is a noticeable shift in tone in the Nobody's Fault But Mine Jam (0:31), and a brief warble, when the SBD track shifts to the second major SBD source used. I fade out the AUD for a moment to regain momentum. 6) I preferred leaving some extended SBD segments between songs (without AUD available) in for timing and/or break purposes. 7) There is some belief, as indicated in several reviews below, that the AUD is a matrix. I do not believe so, but maybe this just happens to be a double matrix source! 8) These were pretty cutty sources for a matrix, but it's 1973, so...At least you can compare the sources some in your four hours of listening pleasure. 9) There's a "Long live the Grateful Dead!" cheer in the SBD right before the matrix kicks in for Black Peter.
