View NotesIt's hard to believe but Phish Bowl XI is here! Eleven years of phish tunes and phun continues in 2020 with Phish Bowl XI, another amazing spectacle from Jedtainment Productions, who seem to raise the bar for this event each year! This year features the return of Kasvot Vaxt cover band "Clueless Wallob" playing two sets of Phish songs, along with an awesome halftime show from singer Savannah Coronet. The production audio is as good as ever, and it might have been the best fireworks display and jet flyover ever at a Phish Bowl, featuring a squadron of jets from the Jed Force this year and an amazing fireworks display provided by PoofNGroovy! As the smoke clears and the jet engines recede, the band emerges with their opener for the big game, the Kasvot Vaxt song "Final Hurrah." It's a fun way to start, complete with "Faceplant into rock" samples, and you can tell the band is locked in immediately. They shift into "46 Days" next, where they loosen up a little with the first improv jam of the night. It's a hot jam that shifts keys into an ambience segment that melts into the Ghosts of the Forest song "About To Run." Jed Luckless delivers a powerful version of the deep tune, rocking the guitar leads dynamically. "Turtle In The Clouds" is up next, another Kasvot tune and last year's opener. It's the fourth song in a row without a time out, so "Coach Jed" takes a break to commend the team on their performance thus far. Mark Mattson takes the lead next on "Wolfman's Brother" which features a fun vocal jam from the Wallobs. The annual Bob Marley birthday tradition is next, and this year it's a fun version of "Stir It Up," featuring a bass solo from Kenny Kaufman. The set closese energetically with the Rolling Stone's song "Loving Cup," which the band rocks out nicely to end the first half. The Halftime intro thanks the Phish Bowl XI sponsors and then introduces Savannah Coronet who delivers an awesome four song Fleetwood Mac tribute, complete with dancers and cheerleaders. After the music, the fanfare continues as The Phish Bowl XI Trophy Presentation crowns 7/14/19 Alpine Valley Music Theater in East Troy, WI as the best Phish show of 2019. Overall, it's a high energy halftime show and the perfect intermission before revving back up for the second set of Clueless Wallob. The band hits the field determined for the second half, opening with a rocking version of "Birds of a Feather," and quickly followed up with a hard-core "Mike's Song" that barely rests before racing into "Chalkdust Torture." CDT produces the longest jam of the night at nearly ten minute long. The three songs together represent over 20 minutes of fast paced grooves, and drummer Pete Martine keeps the band locked in the whole time, especially on the tough turnarounds in Mike's Song. The Chalkdust jam fizzles out, needing some noursihment in the form of "Gumbo," which Kenny leads on vocals. Mark Mattson provides a nice piano solo outro, before Jed kicks things up again with an electrified version of "Sand" featuring some "Martian Monster" samples. The standalone "Sand" gives way to a jammy "Ghost" with a nice jam of it's own and some teases of "About To Run" from Jed. It's paired very nicely here with a beauitufl version of "Dirt." The set closes with another rock & roll cover classic, the Velvet Underground song "Rock And Roll" and it's a great high energy ending to an action packed second half. There's a two song conversion for the encore this year, which featured a Setlist Box Pool consolation prize of a Clueless Wallob t-shirt for the two lucky winners who had "Sleeping Monkey," featuring Pete with some great Fishman vocals, and "First Tube," which is always a great way to close a show. Another amazing Phish Bowl event is in the books and lived up to every bit of the hype. Each year the spectacle is larger and larger, the music is better and better and the tradition is more and more special. Fans of Phish, Jed and Jedtainment events should definitely not miss this one! Enjoy!
