Wavelab 7.1 mastering by Jamie Waddell Track, FLAC and Pack by John Wenzel 16 bit 44.1kHz a project **GEMS** August 2016 Acoustic set includes both David Grisman and David Nelson as guests notes *** this transfer still had the infamous reel shedding in Caution, which is unlistenable, and really unrepairable. Here, Marty Weinberg's great AUD was mastered to suit, and patched in the worst 10 minute section of the tape decay. His aud also had a little issue of dropouts in the area we needed, they were digitally restored. Some tape decay remains as feedback begins, it seemed a natural place for the sound to get a little nutty. The complete listen is quite enjoyable now. - no other board sources were used for any patching here - the beta had the whole show, however a DAT Stucco transferred was preferred sonically for Set 2 by our team and used here - sounds better than any source to date, however tape print through is still audible in select spots - seems same original source material as what's available, attributed to a 'Buddy Miller heavily edited Reel' - some beta tracking issues fixed with digital restoration first 2 mins of UJB - countless fluctuations manually repaired with envelopes in Wavelab montage - no other digital processing applied at all - a little extra pan and volume adjustment made in AWBYG, as one of the mics seemed distant

View NotesDroncit notes: this restoration was undertaken because of a request from Luminarist, who was unable to listen to the second set with any degree of pleasure. It should be much better now. I used shnid 97364 because it seemed to have greater presence than other sources I had access to. Too many changes to document them all, but here are the major things: Set I: Not much was done to the first set except for speed corrections, correcting volume fluctuations, and bringing back the presence. A few dropouts were interpolated. Some of the speed differences will be noticeable as compared to existing sources. This is especially true with My & My Uncle and Mama Tried, as these followed a different path from the rest of the show in terms of at least one transfer involving a different recorder. I also did a little bit of light channel blending on a couple of songs because the vocals and acoustic guitars were very weak and residing primarily in one channel. The mandolins (Grisman and Nelson both play mandolin) are also a little clearer now. Set II: There were a number of fluctuations (see info below), but I have corrected most of these, and very few problems are now evident in Caution, while this was almost unlistenable before. I flipped right and left channels from Not Fade Away through Feedback because they were the reverse of what was typical for the rest of the show. I would guess someone in the chain had flipped them while making a copy. I went with a mono version of And We Bid You Good Night because one channel had only very quiet echo and a lot of hiss (it sounds like live, but unused, stage microphones). A great deal of hiss and lower frequency tape noise (grinding sounds, especially) remain, but this is most evident in headphones, and also most evident between songs. Sounds like 3.75 ips noise to me. If you listen on a stereo at home or in a car, feel free to crank it up loud and you will be rewarded. This is supposed to be a stealth soundboard, but at the beginning of Not Fade Away, it sounds like an audience member (or the taper, more likely) asking another if it's Not Fade Away, so I would imagine it's a stealth aud recording with mics right next to the PAs or on stage. That would account for the mixing issues, and also might account for a few times when a lead guitar solo moves from one channel to the other in the middle of the solo, as well as the heavy hiss (since it would be up close to a PA). I could be wrong though. Thanks to all involved in the recording, seeding, etc. Also thanks to Luminarist and JChastain. I hope you enjoy it.

View Notesnotes: thanks Will and Matt!!! * Matt provided this additional info: "'Casey Jones, China>Rider' from MR>CD courtesy of Bill Gadsden. This portion is the only surviving master of the GD set. According to Bill, his is the same lineage as Will's. However, Will's copy was dubbed at 7 1/2 ips. vs. 3 3/4 ips. with Bill's copy thus making Will's copy the best possible version. This is based on research that Ihor Slabicky and I did last year through email correspondence with Bill. A tiny bit of 'Caution' was patched with the Marty Weinberg AUD courtesy of Michael Parrish. The sonic analomies remain during the 'Caution' however it will not deter from what a fantastic version it truly is!! One of the best 'Feedback's'!! According to a story Pat Lee once told me, the reel was once left out in the sun causing those dropouts."

View NotesThis is a remaster of shnid 1190 - hiss has been reduced - a number of clicks and pops have been removed and some other artifacts cleaned up - a number of volume adjustments have been made - final mastering using iZotope Ozone comments: * according to Deadlists the section of Good Lovin' that was originally included is in fact from 09/18/70 and so I have excluded it here. I've also left out the original d1t13 which was the only NRPS song and is, in any case, incomplete.
