Original Master Recording: SBD feed + Sony ECM-959 -> Realistic mixer -> Denon DTR-80p (master@16/48) Master DAT playback: Sony R500 -> Sound Devices 722 digital input (@24/48) Mastered: Files processed in Steinberg Spectralayers 10 using unmixing tool to create individual instrument stems, isolating the bass track, and then mixing it back into the original recording at a slightly boosted level, also removed some wind noise and a bunch of audience whistles near the end of the show. File then processed in Soundforge Pro 13.0 for volume normalization, slight EQ; 24 -> 16 bit dither using POW-r Dither with POW-r #3 noise shaping. Tracked in CDWav. Tagged in Tag&Rename 3.9.15
Taper Notes:
View NotesThere is a touch of vocal distortion about 4 minutes into "6:15" and some near the end of "Mile By Mile" that clears up quickly. There is also some pretty bad vocal distortion in "Sweet Little Angel". Total time: 2:07:15 Recorded by Scott Bernstein Transferred (4/1/2021), tracked (4/15/2024), mastered (4/12-6/13/2024) and posted (6/21/2024) by Scott Bernstein Thanks to Joe Madonna for a scan of the poster image! Taper Notes: BARN249 represents the last classic GSW show I will be releasing for now (I have a couple of other DATs in my collection that need fresh transfers -- both of which already exist on the archive in similar form, and were not recorded by me), and I held this one back a little to see what I could do to improve the sound, and I believe you'll be happy with the result :) This is a truly awesome show from a peak period in the band's history. A BEAUTIFUL sunny late spring day on an outdoor stage in CT, made famous by the well traded tape of the Phish performance (with the Giant Country Horns) a few years earlier. It was worth the couple of hours that I spent getting there from NYC. This is a truly sublime show. Everything about it just oozes the best of what this band can do — with a beautifully sequenced setlist for a sunny spring day outdoors. You can hear the band diving straight into the deep end of the pool here with 6:15 -> Mile By Mile -> Weird Dream -> Waiting For The Tide -> Pressure -> Driving West -> Crashing Down. This entire sweet segment of the show will get you dancing in your chair (or wherever you are) and put a big smile on your face. The "everyone join in" jam between "Tide" and Pressure is "GOLD". The "Driving West" is breathtaking. There is a rare BASS SOLO in "Nightingale"! As if the show weren't great enough already, everything really peaks with "Taking a Deep Drag..." which is absolutely electric — with a ripping guitar solo and then ending guitar duet on "Into The Sea". Also worth a mention is the vocal jam at the end of "Borderline". As if they hadn't already given us enough, the band tosses us a nearly-30 minute encore with "Dear Prudence", which is PEAK GSW in every way and 10 minutes long, followed by "Sweet Little Angel" which gives and gives and is nearly 14 minutes long!!! This show was the very early days of me experimenting with doing a live soundboard / audience mic matrix and it definitely has a few problems that you can hopefully overlook — there are a few segments with a bit of vocal distortion on Aaron’s vocals — also there is a touch of unwanted delay between the soundboard and my Sony stereo mic, so it sounds a little off due to that — but it’s not really that bad. Even with the flaws, I believe it is definitely an improvement over the dry soundboard that exists up on the archive. Much like the 12/31/94 show where I utilized Steinberg Spectralayers 10 to unmix the recording and bring up the missing vocals in the first 2 sets, I was able to correct one thing that bugged me about this recording — the lack of bass guitar. In this case, I unmixed the master recording in Spectralayers 10, took just the bass track, and mixed it back into the original recording slightly boosted. Enjoy!
