View NotesTotal Time: 53:59 Recorded by Scott Bernstein and Geoff Tischman Transferred (5/3/2020), tracked (4/12/2024), mastered (4/10/2024) and posted (4/23/2024) by Scott Bernstein Taper notes: For BARN 246 I present to you an absolutely beautifully crisp and clear recording Geoff Tischman and I (borrowing Eliot Byron's taping gear) made in exactly the best-sounding location in the venue of this 50ish minute set of GSW opening for Blues Traveler. Despite the brevity of the show, the band manages to hit some peaks with a nice, chill groovy "Driving West", a slightly-more-rocking than usual version of "Twitchin'", RIPPING takes on "Stupid Hat" (which seems to have been in less frequent rotation in this time period) and "Cheap Utah Blues", a take on "Into The Sea" which builds and builds to a giant crescendo before blowing it out with a very very uptempo "Snake Eyes". The room really accentuates Tomo's drums nicely and you can really hear the clear stereo separation on the drums and other instruments if you pay attention. The State Theater in New Brunswick is a beautiful venue in the Downtown of my Alma Mater, Rutgers University. I have seen a lot of shows there over the years, and I can say that Pat Metheny said that it was his favorite venue in the world to play. You can hear the excellent acoustics very obviously on this recording. Despite the brevity of the set, this really showcases what GSW were up to at the time, and might be a great starting point for someone just dipping their toes into the world of GSW. Blues Traveler's headlining set is coming very soon...
