Taper Notes:
View NotesRecorded by Scott Bernstein & Boris Lvovsky Comments by the band onstage indicate that they opened for the Ominous Seapods on this night. Tapers notes: BARN31 is basically a continuation of BARN29, since both were on the same original 3 hour DAT master tape of mine. On this (apparently) hot night (listen to the stage banter -- and if it was hot outside, you can imagine that it must've been scorching inside of Wetlands) just 3 months after the previous Percy Hill show in NYC, Boris and I trekked out to Wetlands to see & tape them playing an opening set for The Ominous Seapods. Percy was ON FIRE and made excellent use of their 80 minute (not bad for an opener) slot for the night. Give a listen, and from note 1 -- opening up with a 15 minute "Been So Long", all the way through the set closing "When I Go" the band just clicks. You know that the heat in the room and the killer feedback they were getting from the crowd (listen to the crowd response, for an **opening** band!) The matrix that we did really highlights the spectacular contributions that Jon Hawes was making in the band at this point (thanks to the single Oktava mic which Boris had just recently purchased for fattening up the bottom end on this recording). There is a bit of distortion (probably coming from the SBD feed overloading the mixer a bit) in the beginning, and after someone yells to us that they can hear this distortion through their headphones (you can hear this clearly on the recording!), some tweaks were made to the mix and it mostly goes away though continues slightly every so often for some drum hits in the left channel only. I don't have a ton of memories about this show, but think it sounds great and is a really nice representation of what the band was doing at this time. When they were getting such a great response from the crowd and packing it in as an opener, you know they were in for bigger and better things.
