View Notes"The Broken Men" opened; "Solar Circus" played after There is no rhythm guitar in the mix until 5:49 into the 1st song If you're wearing headphones check out the cool stereo imaging stuff that the soundguy was doing with panning the guitar and later the keys in the L/R channel during track 11 Recorded, mastered, and tracked by Scott Bernstein (4/14-23/2010) Taper notes: Continuing my odyssey of digging into my earliest recordings of my favorite bands of the 90s, I unearthed this crispy Percy Hill soundboard for BARN29. For me, the ascendancy of Percy Hill as one of my favorite bands happened to coincide with the decline of God Street Wine, another favorite band during the same time period. The Wetlands, in another of their inspired bookings, slotted Percy Hill to open up for moe. in February of '96, which got me to see them for the first time and whom I enjoyed enough to sign up for their mailing list. The next time they came back into NYC which was only a month later in March, I decided to go see (and tape) them at a tiny club I'd never been to before, The Lion's Den. It was not exactly The Wetlands in terms of vibe or sound system, but it was super intimate and the friendly staff made it easy for me to get a board patch, so you all get the benefit now of listening to a super crispy early Percy recording. Percy Hill is in semi-retirement now and had been through at least 3 major lineup (and song repertoire) changes after this time period, but this is Percy in their second lineup (which is very close to their original lineup), with original members Zack & Nate Wilson on percussion and keys, Tom Powley and Joe Farrell on guitar, and Tim Leavy on drums. This is soon after the incredibly funky Jon Hawes joined the band on bass (after Moon Boot Lover decided to tour as a trio with just the Evans brothers, Neal and Allen [who went on to form Soulive] and Peter Prince on guitar/vocals) and in my opinion Jon really kicked the band up a notch! This was my first of hundreds of shows that I wound up going to at the Lion's Den before it became Sullivan Hall in 2008, and it continues to this day to be a launching pad for smaller bands before they break out into bigger rooms.
