View NotesNotes: - Thanks to Bob Wagner for the master cassette source. Bob and Barry Glassberg taped the Spring '80 shows together, they each had one Nakamichi 700 mic and each had a D5 deck. They ran their individual mics together as a pair and each recorded a master on their respective D5's. One night Bob was the lead deck, the next night Barry was the lead deck. Bob does not recall who was the lead deck on which nights. - Thanks to Charlie Miller for the transfer and coordinating this effort - Thanks to Joani Walker, Paul Scotton and Charlie Miller for the Sony ECM250 source which supplies some crowd and first notes of "Lost Sailor" (0:31 total), as well as an 0:18 patch in "Drums" - Thanks to Joe B. Jones for his assistance with the pitch correction Mastered by Scott Clugston June 2022

Taper Notes:
View NotesNotes: - This was possibly a Panasonic portable; John recalls "holding it up to head level". - Mono-mixed patch from ID-99887 covers tape-flip in Jam 3:22 > 3:47. - Seems like the deck was lowered or set-down for U.S.Blues, it's muffled.

Recorded By Mason Taylor on a Nakamichi 550 Cassette Deck, on chrome tapes, with Nakamichi microphones
Taper Notes:
View Notes"Mason B. Taylor was a taper from Chicago that recorded concerts by many bands in the Chicagoland area and on Dead tours. He used a Nakamichi 550 with Nakamichi 300 mics with shotgun capsules for most of his earlier recordings. In later years he used Sony D-5 and Sony D-3 cassette recorders with Nakamichi 300 mics. Mason captured spectacular musical moments and loved to share them with his closest friends. In honor of Mason and all the love he put into his recordings we are now able to share these moments with those who can appreciate them most. As the shows get uploaded we would love for you to share your stories about the epic times the music evokes so we can all dial back into that moment when the magic was happening. Thanks to Mason’s family and his Chicago and Cleveland friends for opening up Mason’s Jar…"

Lineage:

Taper Notes:
View NotesMastering Notes - Software applied - WaveLab 5.0 > iZotope Ozone 3 > CD Wave Editor 1.9 > FLAC [Level 8] - Peaks lowered slightly with Nomad Limiting Amplifier, along with slight RMS level increase. - Processed about 100 handclaps to reduce their relative decibel level, most noticeably at the beginning of s1t03. - s2t02 - Beginning of "Lost Sailor" was cut and faded in. - No patch sources were used. - Cross-fades were applied at tape flips before at pauses between songs when necessary. Notes - s1t03 - Slightly noticeable stuttering effect during "Friend Of The Devil" due to processing of handclaps during mastering; mainly noticeable during beginning of song. - s2t02 - Missing lyrics "Compass card is spinning" and some amount of instrumental lead-in at beginning of "Lost Sailor". - s2t04 - Jerry vocal problems during "Terrapin Station", going into the fifth verse after the first lead guitar solo. Jerry either blanks out or there's a technical issue. They play the complete verse phrasing, plus some - but with instruments only - then recover and Jerry does the lyrics.
