View Notes$1.99 Romances album release show Recorded by Scott Bernstein and Brendan O'Neill Transferred (4/1/2021), tracked (1/27/2024), mastered (1/27/2024) and posted (1/27/2024) by Scott Bernstein Follow me on Twitter to track my postings of FREE live music and concert photography: http://www.twitter.com/scott_bernstein Or become a "fan" on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Scott-Bernsteins-Live-Music-Photos-Page/166706713365451 Taper Notes: Moving along in my BARN series, I've been promising to dig back into my deep God Street Wine archives for the Winos...and here we go...continuing in chronological order...Brings us to the $1.99 Romances Album Release party show. I'd already posted my recording of the free acoustic set that they'd done in the afternoon at the E86th St. HMV record store to celebrate the album release (available here https://archive.org/details/gsw1994-10-08.early.ecm959.flac16.48) and now it's time to get the big nighttime party. I know that Eric Budke posted his soundboard recording ages ago -- BUT this is a completely different experience. My audience recording (hat tip to old friend Brendan O'Neill [who would go on to mix FOH sound for GSW for a bit soon after this show...and then to mix sound for moe....and then Tom Marshall's band for a bit] for renting the amazing sounding Neumann KM140s we recorded this show with -- it was before I owned my own microphones) will provide a COMPLETELY different experience to listening to the soundboard that is posted. If you like the FUNKY side of GSW and want to hear Dan's 5 string bass loudly and clearly, you'll want to hear THIS version. Additional benefits of this recording: loud and clear drums, in-your-face guitars. (If you're all about the vocals, you may prefer Budke's Soundboard recording.) Starting with Jon Bevo's Dad's hilarious intro, this show is all about the album release. You can tell they are psyched and have a lot to get through. They literally bash through the first 3/4 of the first set -- playing well, but not detouring for any jams to speak of -- not even in "Epiphany" (one of my favorites). There is a rare performance of the instrumental "The Dinner Guest" -- which has a very "Stupid Hat"-ish feel. FINALLY the band lights "Light My Candles" on fire with a match. This version is MASSIVE and has a shredding guitar solo. At this point, they finally feel comfortable enough to throw caution to the wind and play a unique version of "The Princess Henrietta" with a fun vocal jam mid-song! Always the self-deprecating host (and in hindsight, it's uncanny how right he was), Lo opens the second set with a statement along the lines of "Folks, a major label album release is not the end of the journey for us...now we're just another schlock band on a major label". After a great take on "Into The Sea", the band segues into a rare (and expansive) "Big Papa" (mis-identified for at least a decade on Budke's recording and on the setlist.fm page as "Cheap Utah Blues" -- which it most certainly is not), a HOT HOT HOT "Wendy", and a down and dirty "Brand New Pussycat". The crux of this set, for me, is a STRONG version "Fortress Of Solitude" -- well played, and at a slightly faster tempo than they play it these days. Dedicated to John Lennon (whose birthday hit at midnight...which had probably just passed at this show), the band (who always had Beatles tunes in their repertoire) pull out a slightly reggae-ified take on "A Day In The Life". Finally for the encore, they pull out 2 brand new ones: "Revealing Nothing" (featuring an almost unheard-of Jon Bevo vocal performance"), "RU 4 Real?" (which would be featured on their next album, Red), and a great old chestnut "Molly". What a performance of a band really at the top of their game! Thanks to Brendan and the Neumanns (and our up-front recording location), this recording sounds super duper crispy. I am ecstatic to present this recording to you nearly 30 years after it was recorded!!!! Enjoy!

View NotesTotal time: 41:02 * = announced as the "country version" (hiliariously, Aaron and Lo sing the guitar solos!) Lo and Aaron played acoustic guitars, Bevo played accordion, Tomo played a basic drum kit with brushes, Dan played an acoustic bass The band played a full electric show at Irving Plaza later that night, but this was a promotional appearance for their album "$1.99 Romances" at the East 86th Street HMV in the afternoon Recorded by Scott Bernstein Original DAT Transfer: 2/7/2012 (came for "free" as it was filler on the 4/30/94 DAT) DAT re-transfer (due to the presence of one digital drop-out): 4/21/2019 Tracking, Mastering, and Tagging: 6/19-23/2019 Taper Notes: Coming back to one of my old favorite bands -- God Street Wine for BARN184, I know it's been years since I dug into my archives to pull out a God Street Wine performance to share with you, but here's a real gem of a show! A short but sweet intimate acoustic performace at the E86 Street HMV record store in New York City to celebrate the release of their $1.99 Romances CD in the afternoon before a killer show at Irving Plaza that evening. Ever want to hear Bevo play accordion? Ever want to hear GSW play their music as they hold a dance contest to win a pair of tickets for that night's show? Ever want to hear the "country version" of Wendy? Well now you can! You can really hear the band having fun with the material, and the crowd was having a fun time (including, apparently, a baby!). I was truly ready to post this recording back in early October of 2013, but upon scrutiny, noticed a single digital dropout on the recording that apparently came through during my DAT transfer (DAT is a notoriously unreliable medium), so I held off to achieve perfection -- and finally got around to re-transferring and working on the recording in 2019. Time flies! Anyway, hope you enjoy listening back to this as much as I did. Enjoy!
