View NotesRecording, transfer (2/7/2012), mastering, tracking, tagging (9/30-10/3/2013) by Scott Bernstein Patched out of Eliot Byron's gear, likely run by Geoff Tischman on this night Taper notes: After a small detour into some very old cassette recordings of mine (and there will be LOTS more of those older cassettes in the future), I'm turning back to a couple of shows by one of my old favorites -- God Street Wine. I have been occasionally transferring and posting my GSW recordings chronologically from oldest to newest, and the last one I posted was BARN129 from 12/31/93 [yikes, has it really been a year and a half since I posted this?! It'll be years before I get thru all of my GSW DATs at this pace]. So for BARN154 I am returning to the trough to put out the next GSW show that I witnessed and taped -- and as luck would have it -- it just happens to be my favorite GSW show that I ever saw! Back to the scene of the crime at Irving Plaza, the venue at which I saw most of my GSW shows and which the band had now been playing at for a year and felt very comfortable in by this point. I suspect (but I can't say for sure) that Lo and the band would examine the setlists from previous shows at the venue and try and throw in some songs that they'd never played there before. Remember, this was back in the days when the internet was in its infancy and people weren't tracking setlists instantly like they do now! Anyway, what makes this show so special? Let's start with a beautiful take on Pachabel's "Canon in D", a great run through "Nightingale", "Ballroom", and "6:15" taking us up to an ON FIRE version of "Stupid Hat". Just listen to the breakneck tempo they're playing this one at and the fluidity of Lo's guitar leads (which unfortunately I haven't heard him come anywhere near being able to touch these days...). Wow -- this could be the *ultimate* version of this song. Anyway, most of the other highlights come in the form of rare setlist choices: "Suicide Girl", "Who's Driving" (great song, rarely played at the time), "God Street", and most importantly their cover of Frank Zappa's "Trouble Everyday" (which I've never seen them play since) which is just DOWN AND DIRTY. Other highlights include a sublime "Driving West", a rockin' "Tina's Town", and the always welcome "Morning Cigarettes". We get a nice treat for the encore of a Beatles double-shot with a perfect segue between "I Dig A Pony" and "I've Got A Feeling" topped of by a great "Wendy". This is an absolutely classic, "as good as it gets" performance by a band at the height of its prowess. A MUST HEAR. Not to mention that this is a wonderful sounding recording made patched out of Eliot Byron's gear in the perfect location in the venue. Bravo to everyone involved!!! Enjoy!
