Players: Charles Atkins - keyboards and vocals The Blues Boys Larry Laseur - harmonica, backup vocals Harty Wiedemann - guitar, vocals $ Tom Henning - guitar featuring Andy Cornett - bass, vocals # Stretch Evans - drums Highlights: tracks 3, 6, 8, 10, 15, 21 Notes: The venue: Bimini's was a little seafood place / music club located about 2 blocks from the Florida State University football stadium. It was run by Jeff and Crystal - Jeff the big fisherman with lots of pictures of him sport fishing and the usual mounted sailfish and things on the walls; and Crystal a long tall blond who everyone loved. I think they were able to stay open a year or 2. The place was then occupied by the Beta Bar which later moved up to Railroad Ave when the Seminole Boosters bought the blocks around the new big money stadium for parking for a handful of home games each year. Tom had his car repair shop located near there, which was also bought out from under him. It was always nice to walk over from my office on campus to his shop during the workday and share lunch, sit under the pecans, and BS. Now it's all just a huge deserted lot with parking pads and RV hookups. The music: How about them 'noles? So this was a Saturday night at Bimini's after a football game. The gig started at 10:45 so I guess it must have been a night football game and we didn't start till it was over - or something... The first 2 songs have some issues, feedback and such, but then the sound settles down and is a pretty decent recording overall. I believe I was mixing from the wings, stage left, this night - crowded quarters on stage but just right for some good energy. There are 22 tunes on the 2 tapes and as you can see from the setlists, they almost played them in order. I was going to highlight Stormy Monday as one of my favs but after listening in my car, the squawking and squelching from what I think was the harp got pretty annoying - sorry about that. The rest of them are good tho. Andy Cornett is sitting in on bass and featured on his song Keeping the Blues Alive. Andy was an older grad student at FSU, something with TV and radio production. He hung with Charles for a few years and got him side gigs and helped him get around; one in a long line of friends and students backing Charles. Back home in Louisiana, Andy is a long time member of Henry Gray's blues band. Henry can be found at www.henrygray.com - Andy at his production company www.luckycatproductions.com - Pictures of Andy and Henry at www.pbase.com/dwbur/image/32557125/large Charles is playing the big 88-key Rhodes now and it sure makes a difference - good solos here and there; great stuff when backing the boys' solos or driving the songs. And I know it's a good night cause Larry is relaxed and even Harty's singing (never a strong point altho necessary for Charles to rest some) is passable. Sure helps when they all can hear each other and are able to play off each other. Last note: I think this was the night Bill Wharton came in late as we were sitting at the bar after the show bugging Crystal for one more round of beers as she tried to close up. Bill grabbed a beer and we all nodded and no one said nothing about how he had just fired 2 of his longtime Ingredients, Jiggs Walker and Dennis Everhart (bass and drums). Funny how the news got to us during a gig, long before he ever even came in. Favorite memory of Bill and the Ingredients was a Bullwinkle's Happy Hour outside in the "beer garden". He enticed a young coed to come up front and dance and then he jumped down from the stage and egged her along, obviously sexual with him playing her as well as guitar, pushing things as only Bill can. Saw her sitting on the back steps after, kinda dazed, and no doubt wondering what just happened. Christmas 2007 at Ochlockonee River State Park - sunny and cold cold cold, don't think the kayak will even get wet this weekend. Guess I'll go build a fire and burn meat and soak up veggies in a stew. So it took about 4 months to get thru this zippered cassette case of live gigs; another year should see another box of practice sessions and two more of live shows. The practice sessions will go back in time from 3-11-93 (first LMA posting); the live shows go forward from 9-13-92 (latest LMA posting); maybe they will crash into each other. Looking ahead (or is it looking back), I certainly see / saw some jewels, like more new songs recorded in practice once and never again played. Enjoy this one! - SCopeland --
