Players: Charles Atkins - keyboards and vocals The Blues Boys Larry Laseur - harmonica Harty Wiedemann - guitar Tom Henning - guitar ? Bernie Powers - bass ? - drums Notes: I wasn't too sure if I would post this recording at first, but after a second listen, and now with a darn good pair of SONY earbuds, the mix ain't as bad as I thought. Ain't real good either. The vocals are strong, harp too much at times, the guitars are down some which is cool, and you can hear bass and drums. Charles is on the Casio. He also had a stage amp/speaker for it so in a small room like Finale's that was often enough. Despite some ringing here and there, I got almost lucky on the board this night, altho I didn't really know what I was doing yet. For example - turning up reverb on Tell Mama, but not bringing it down after. Sure wish I could go back and turn down the gain on vocals and harp. Drummer? - don't know who is drumming for sure - Chuck, Stretch? This is a mix-down of the original tape made at the Grand Finale - a Saturday night this time, not one of the Blue Monday Jams also recorded Spring 92. The usual standards, some originals from Animal Called the Blues, a couple guests. Several of the tracks are not complete with a fade in or out. So the first 2 tracks are good. Charles has a weird start with the words on Everyday I have the Blues. Wee Wee Hours is OK but for the harp getting too hot. Not the Liar is done well; good start to Mannish Boy by Bernie but it got cut off. At the start of Harty doing Who Is Loving You Tonight - Charles quote "This is dedicated to me." OK Charles. Sugar Sweet is cool but then just as Hold that Train is getting near the end, it fades out. Man's World has something screwy going on in the beginning but then it gets better. Charles' vocals are awesome. Guests: track 14 is Randy Webster (Mighty Big Blues Band, and currently, Big Daddy and the Red Hot Java - www.bigdaddyblues.com ) doing his signature song - Sweet Home Chicago. Sounds like vocal mic ringing onstage but they get thru it. And then we get to hear Carlos Barrientos on The Thrill Is Gone. Sure wish we had more of him on tape. ( www.carmapro.com/music/carmamusic.htm ) This recording closes with long versions of Blues is Alright and Knock On Wood - not sure who is backing Charles, and even tho it's closing on 2 AM, Charles don't wanna stop.
