Notes by Jay Flemma: Once again the band returned to the Waterhole and played long into autumn night. The first set featured a touching She Makes the Journey, a long exploratory John Henry's, and a hilarious Cancelled to close. Since it was Unofficial-but-close-enough-for-Jazz to the Seapods birthday North Country Freaks Muddy Butt and Anissa brought up a beautiful Seapod logo cake before the band burst into a slammin' Blackberry to open the second set. Dana followed with one of the last Fisherman's Blues, beautiful and poignant. The rest of the set was like an All-star line-up. A long Until I Break led into Tom Thumb's Blues->Juneau, AK, which absolutely rocked the North Country bluegrass crowd. One of the last Millworker's Laments followed. The end was ridiculous, even by Seapod standards. Hey Donnie Osmond had BOTH Stayin' Alive AND a ludicrously funny "Red Riding Hood Jam" where Max shrieks at Dana while wearing that ghastly mask of the girl with pigtails. "ARE ARE ARE ARE YOU THE BIG BAD WOLF?" "I CAN’T UNDERSTAND YOU. ARE ARE ARE ARE YOU THE BIG BAD WOLF? And of course Dana responds, "I AM THE BIG BAD WOLF LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD! AND I'M GOING TO EAT YOU OUT FOR DINNER! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!" Max: "Okay. Fine. Have your little fit." The Jump for Joy closer was my idea. You’re welcome. P.S. The setlist posted online is incorrect, I'm happy to say: it was actually a TRIPLE encore, closing with Heaven by Talking Heads! P.P.S. Seapods official birthday is 11/17, for those of you scoring at home. One final side note: early Waterhole shows tend to sound slightly different from each other (and perhaps roughly mixed) due to the soundboard being much smaller that that of say Bogie's. Prior to the days of Chris Graf or Marty Racine handling soundboard duties, when it comes to Waterhole mixes, your mileage may vary from show to show. This recording's sonic quality is highly trebly, with significant reverb. At times it might seem a little thin and echo-ey and perhaps mixed oddly in a few places. Nevertheless, it is also a watershed moment for the Seapods historically, hence its inclusion in this first wave of releases. And hey, for those who like their music like their pizza, thin and crispy, it's great!
