Notes by Jay Flemma: The weekend of 10-14/15-94 was one of the historic watersheds of the old days. The Pods played three full shows in the North Country within 28 hours: back-to-back nights at P.B. Finnan's sandwiching a day gig at SUNY Potsdam. After a long, three set Friday night show that had the entire band family aglow with that inimitable North Country vibe, everyone went back to Maria's house, a quaint, charming place in an apple orchard just outside of town. For three hours sleep… Our heads hit the pillow at 3:30 a.m. if we were lucky. We all had to be in the van by 7:00 for a 9:30 load-in. That was a van full of pretty crispy people, let me tell you. It was also loaded with gear. A 15-passenger van becomes much, MUCH smaller when you add things like Hammond B-3s and drums. Band, crew, and taper were sardined between pyramids of gear, with poor Bob Kelly actually lying flat on a piece of gear that shifted forward and back whenever the van would brake or speed up. (That's why you wear your hockey helmet in the van!) I got lucky. I drew the passenger seat on the ride out. The first thing I noticed was that the Wank Report was gone, and something else was in its place. The Wank Report, for those of you scoring at home, was a piece of paper taped to the back of one of the benches where the boys would check off whenever they…well, you know… Perhaps predictably, the Wank Report died out pretty quickly from lack of participation, but its replacement, the "Fart Chart," proved wildly popular. I saw a long string of checks next to Max's name, almost twice his closest pursuer, (I think it was Ted…) We were all on Econobrain, just barely alive until we passed a restaurant sign that had obviously been hijacked. You know how they'll spell out something like "Steak dinner 15.00, soup and sandwich 10.00"? Well the one we passed said "Suck my dick 99 cents and eat shit 11.95." That woke us up. We laughed all the way to Potsdam. It was freezing for an outdoor gig for the Zeta Gamma Sigma sorority, so cold, Max, Dana, and Tom wore "musician's mittens" fleece or wool gloves with the fingers cut off so you can play. It was a full two sets, and despite being frozen, crispy critters with no sleep, the boys acquitted themselves quite well. Wheels, Blackberry, Get Out of my Life Woman was a solid opening run, Juneau, Alaska, Sally Simpson, and Sneakin' Sally kept everyone dancing, and by the closing Buzz->Creamer, Monopole came, the Pods had won over everyone on campus, and the party was raging. Every five minutes they were asked to yell out "Social!" Second set opened with Cancelled, featured a mid-set John Henry's Hammer and a mid-set Jump for Joy, (over time both of those would move to later points in set lists, in Jump for Joy's case, often to a closing slot). Bong Hits and Porn->Adirondack Blue closed, followed by the triple encore or Pinball Wizard->I Hope I Shall Arrive Soon->Room of Ruins. Pretty solid for no sleep. Incidentally, if you hear a bunch of drunk girls screaming "1/4 lb. Hotdog," you know who put them up to it. Afterwards we all piled into the van for the ride back to Finnan's and the legendary three set mutancy that awaited there. Then it was back to Maria's and the apple orchard to once again bask in the warm Seapod glow, before driving back home through the Adirondacks the next afternoon. Golden days.
