This is one that I have been wanting to release since the beginning of my archive series...but alas, the master tape was missing from my archives...it took some years to track down and retrieve...but thanks to a nice confluence of circumstances, I was able to get the tape back, transfer it and finally unleash it on the world. First, some background: This is a recording of the first time I saw Moon Boot Lover. It was part of a multi-band bill at Wetlands, put together (if I recall correctly) by "Smug Magazine". Other acts on the bill: Pound (long gone, but rocking...at the time they were up-and-coming from the "farm team" venue for Wetlands: The Nightingale Bar), Yolk, and moe. I was there to see moe., who I had absolutely fallen in love with exactly 14 days earlier in this same location on July 8th. It also happened to be the auspicious occasion of the eve of my 25th birthday -- which we would get to ring in during moe.'s set! Additionally this is a historic night as it was the night that Jim Loughlin, who was at the time the drummer for now, would be "handed off" to Yolk -- i.e. it was to be Jim's last show with moe. and his first show with Yolk. My recording of this moe. set was posted decades ago as part of the "moe.dank" project and lives here https://archive.org/details/moe1995-07-22dnk.shn -- I recorded the Yolk (and Pound) sets as well but currently remain in my archives....which makes me think it's time to transfer and get them out one of these decades. :) On to this set -- Pound and Yolk had both already played and I had no idea what to expect out of a band with this unique name. Well my expectations were more than met...in fact they absolutely blew my mind. How to describe them? -- a stew of funk, soul, a touch of rock, and that X-factor of Peter Prince and his twisted guitar playing and on-stage charisma. But Peter Prince was not the only star of this band -- they had a SOLID funky bassist in John Hawes (who would, the following year, leave MBL to join Percy Hill), and the brothers Neal and Alan Evans, who would go on to form Soulive with Eric Krasno in 1999 (Neal Evans would go on to become Jack White's touring keyboardist, and remains so to this day). Truly an all star band. The cover songs (or snippits of them) here reveal their influences quite well: Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, Kool and the Gang...but also Jimi Hendrix and Chicago blues artists. Getting to this actual performance, they hooked everyone in the audience IMMEDIATELY with their opening uptempo acapella take on the traditional song "Travelin' Shoes"...kicked into gear with a few licks of Sly and the Family Stone's "Dance To The Music", and blasted off from there. A few very specific things I recall about this show. Having never seen them before, and in the pre-internet days, I had no idea what the band looked like. So when they came out, I said to myself "Wow, this guy (Peter Prince) sure has a strange hair style"...and about half way through the show, he rips off the awful wig he was wearing and tosses it out into the crowd...who proceeded to go wild! Also (and you'll here Peter mention it at some point between songs), there was a large stuffed bear being tossed around the audience during this set. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this delicious-sounding soundboard+audience matrix recording I made (in conjunction with Brendan O'Neill who was the FOH engineer for moe. at the time) at the show. It did not need much work to get it to sound awesome (some volume smoothing, a bit of EQ to bring up Peter's vocals and the organ), and now I hope this recording brings you as much joy as it brings me to listen to 27 years later!!! Enjoy!
