My friend John and I taped this show, so it's hard to be objective, but I think it's pretty great. We borrowed my friend Nat's portable DAT, headed over to Cambridge (a three-hour drive), and here are the results. Maybe the vocals could be a bit more upfront, but the instruments sound fantastic, and the audience is quiet. There's a small disturbance at the start of "Be There" when someone tried to walk between me (holding the DAT) and John (holding the mic), but it's over quickly. It was a beautiful concert, with a great mix of old and new, of "hits" and seldom-heard songs. "Stay" is one of my favorite songs from Long Division, but I didn't realize what a treat we were getting -- it's a really rare bird, and I don't know of any other tapes that have it. This show also has my favorite versions of "Condescend", "Landlord", and "Lust". This concert was also my first exposure to Ida, the opening act, who played an absolutely gorgeous set. I think Y-Mike, the soundman at the Middle East made a DAT tape of this show too, but I don't have it / haven't heard it. Earlier transfers of this show were made through analog cables, but this transfer, from summer 2005, is all-digital. The peak level of the music is something like -4.0 dB, so you can apply about 3 dB of gain safely if you want (though the applause will clip). Enjoy, and thanks again to Nat and his DAT!
