Taper Notes:
View NotesNice-sounding Low show from the Songs for a Dead Pilot era. Richard L. obtained a 1st gen cassette from the taper back in the late '90s, and transferred it to CDR, making me a copy shortly thereafter. I've never seen a digital transfer around, so this 1st gen is the best we have for now. The cassette generation is audible -- there's a bit of hiss, and mild distortion at the loudest parts -- but otherwise the sound quality is quite good. There were a few funky transitions between tracks -- specifically, a stuttering effect at the end of each track that was probably caused by some mysterious offset setting, back in the early days of CDR. I've repaired those, as well as three or four digital clicks and pops that happened here and there. I also added a quick fade at the very beginning and end, to ease the abrupt transitions ("Down" cuts in during the first note). Otherwise, these files are exactly as I received them. Peak level is -5.3 dB, so you can add about 5 dB of gain when burning this show to CD, if you like. I believe the taper of this show, who may or may not be named J. Hatten, also taped a Low show at Bimbo's in May 1997 (which I've never seen a copy of anywhere). If you're out there, it'd be great if you could upgrade this 1st gen with your original digital master! This is one of two known recorders for this show; I might upload the other one sometime in the future, though it's a dictaphone-style recording that doesn't sound nearly as good as this.
