I caught the end of their set that featured Kevin Sinclair on his soprano sax for a crazy funky Night Court jam that really blew me away. After wishing Jackie a quick Happy Birthday, they got down to business with a nice Triscuit. There was something unusual in the middle – kind of a different jam that was hard to describe but I liked it. Then we got to hear Come Home, a newer song from Tim that has a loping reggae feel to it. Ryan from Fat Maw came up to play on Crosseyed & Painless and it was definitely the highlight of the first set. They were really going for it on this one and it just didn't want to quit. Break Of Day was pretty solid, and it segued into one of the other new ones called Spider. It's a bit dark and eerie feeling in the minor key, but I like it. The second set was one to behold, starting with a Ramble On and Loving Cup. Mick Jagger turned 64 at midnight, and maybe this was a tribute to him? Either way, the jam out of Loving Cup was coined the `AA' Jam (Awesomely Amazing) and it had Ryan and Jason really feeding off of each other and taking it to new heights before it segued into Electric Shoes. Next up came A Day In The Life which was pretty straight-forward. Afterwards there was a moment or three of indecision that had them doing a tease / jam / quasi-full song / trainwreck of Emotional Rescue. It seemed like it was close, and one day I hope to see them play a full version of it because it was just so much fun! They they still didn't seem to know what to do so they teased The Squirms and about a half dozen other things before going into a Theme From The Bottom. This one turned out to be a real monster with Ryan doing a cool Blue Sky tease/riff in the jam and sounding incredible. They rocked it until well past 1:30, so we didn't get an encore this time. But as usual, I don't think anyone was too disappointed after that second set. It was huge and full of teases, treats, and ferocious jams. I really hope the recordings turned out good for this one! There's no show this weekend, so enjoy the nice weather and we'll see you back at the Cabooze next Wednesday!
