Here is a recording I did a few years ago of Billy Corgan's post-Pumpkins project Zwan. There are a few tapes of this show out there. In particular, I know of Jason Roth's excellent Schoeps tape, which was recorded a few feet from one of the PA stacks. My tape was recorded just off to the back left behind the soundboard, above the floor. I got a very nice stereo spread, and the sound came out great. This was an excellent show, with lots of extended solos and jams, typical of what Billy was doing with this new outfit. I, like many, viewed Zwan as essentially a more upbeat version of the Pumpkins, with more songs in major keys as opposed to minor ones, and with slightly more directly religious lyrics. At the time, many a Pumpkin fan responded to points like this by saying that since James and D'arcy were absent, it was indeed a different band, and shouldn't have been compared to the Smashing Pumpkins. I agree with that logic. But now that the recent "reunion" of the Pumpkins still only has Billy and Jimmy in it, perhaps they should go back and rename Zwan the Smashing Pumpkins as well. Or maybe they should be calling the "reunited" Smashing Pumpkins Zwan. I dunno. In any case, I thought Zwan was great. Too bad they imploded so soon after this tour. I Would've liked to have heard more from them. Enjoy!
