Created this text file. elegymart Notes: --THE ELEGYMART ARCHIVES, VOL. 4 --Gonna let these volumes roll out as the occasion calls for it. In this case, thanks to mossa for the other version that was transferred, and to mjcrossuk for upping -- it helped spur on digging into the collection and revisiting this one. --The source cassette for this arrived via a tape trading friend back in the days when we were both heavily into Cip. Robert had the hometown advantage of being based in San Francisco, so he could wander into Wolfgang's, the Chi Chi Club, the Full Moon Saloon, or wherever Cip might surface in one of the many bands he played in, attend and tape the shows. Robert knew some of the Cipollinas, and so the correspondence with him would always bring welcome news. Robert was also a bit busy, and trades would come through every month or so. By the time he sent this along, it was October 1988, and he wrote: "Here's your Zero tape, it's good. Cipollina just quit the band and John Kahn is playing bass with them now." We were both severely devastated when Cip passed away a year and a half later. --Robert had this show on his list not long after the show took place, but misdated as 17 December. Meanwhile, the mossa transfer and the Live Music Archive has this dated as 16 December. It is definitively Wednesday the 16th as the MC announces "We're live at New George's, it's our Weekend Wednesday show" after Cip's band intros. KRQR ("The Rocker") did several live broadcasts as part of their "Weekend Wednesday" programs, including a Problem Child show also broadcast from New George's two months later. --So much time has passed now, we'll just go with the info on the tape that this is a 2nd gen. The edits between tracks seem reminiscent of the way Robert would record. He tended to use the pause button (possibly on his D6) to make edits. Here it was likely to omit out station iDs. "The Core," which is not on the other commonly circulating copies of this broadcast, has the station ID right on top of the opening notes into the song. Is that why it was excluded on most versions, because that would reveal that this isn't a soundboard, but a broadcast? Again, who knows at this point. --Another interesting thing is the jumbled sequence of the other versions. It's unlikely that Robert would have changed up the order on the cassette he traded out to yours truly, and when you hear this in what should be the proper sequence, they do inform the audience that "Golden Road" is the final song. "Little Wing" on the other hand, is not the last song, as the band are clearly still miling about ready to go into the next number, but is situated as the last track on the other versions. It's not the most scientific conclusion, but if you do a survey of the live Zero shows from late 1986 to early 1988, there doesn't seem to be a set where the band ever played both "Little Wing" and "Golden Road" where "Little Wing" ended the set. (Confusingly, the band do mention "The King" right after the second song, but they don't launch into that until the latter part of the set.) --Sadly this is not a different source than the others, but the same one that Robert probably taped off the radio. So it has all the same flaws: "Little Wing" has that dropout at the start which has been edited out on the other versions and the same was done here. The edit in "Riding with the King" on the other versions was to remove, as you'll hear on this, a broadcast reception glitch in that part of the song. The decision here was to retain it even though it is a bit jarring only because there is still music audible underneath it. This should dispel any notion that this is a soundboard, unless you lump soundboards and broadcasts together as one and the same. --Taking a departure here from the Zero setlists which incorrectly name the opening track here as "Baby Baby" -- to restore the song title back to the Ronnie Shannon-penned number that we all know from the Queen of Soul. --Many thanks to Robert for sending this over 33-plus years ago. --Enjoy, elegymart vanillag NOTES (1/8/2023): --Thanks so much to elegymart for sharing his copy of this Zero 1987 show & also BIG thanks to mjcrossuk as well for upping this at dime & then hopping back on as a seed for me so I could grab it & upload it here to LMA for everyone. Absolutely Appreciated!! --Apologies to --this was part of a series on KRQR called "Weekend Wednesday" --added more detail to the setlist --added the ffp fingerprints to the text file --add pics of the venue --https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_George%27s
