Transferred (10/2011), mastered, and tracked (5/24-25/2012) by Scott Bernstein The band: Wayne Horvitz - keys Tim Young - guitar Andrew Roth - drums Keith Lowe - bass Taper notes: For BARN139, I present a band & a set I hardly remembered -- the opening act for Medeski Martin & Wood's late night set in the High Sierra Music Hall at the High Sierra Music Fest in 2002. I rushed over from the main stage to get there in time, but it takes a little while to get in and get set up, and these guys were already playing. Bill Mulvey and I, by this point in the fest realized that the late night hall where this show was is sort of a barn, and not that acoustically great. So we came up with an idea to run a huge split on mics and move them sort of close to the stage...and the results as seen here are pretty spectacular. If you've never seen or heard these guys before, Zony Mash was really Wayne Horvitz's project -- not all that unlike Medeski Martin & Wood, but a tad more groove-oriented (I mean they got their name from a Meters song!). Some of their songs are very funky and Meters-esque, and others are somewhat more jazzy -- more "downtown jazzy" than classic jazz. I would never have pulled this show out specifically to transfer, but it came along "for free", as it was recorded on the same DAT as the Bruce Hornsby set I recorded earlier that same night (which will be the next entry in the BARN series)! If you want to hear The Meters with some more jazzy elements, or MMW with slightly more groove/funk and slightly less "out there"-ness, Zony Mash/Wayne Horvitz might be your cup of tea. Enjoy!
