Taper Notes:
View NotesRight off the back, I have to mention that my gear is primarily for stealth recording, which isn't neccessary with Umphrey's McGee. Therefore, this recording was done from the floor with microphones pinned to my collar. This means that all sorts of crowd noise is picked up. I go to a lot of concerts, and by far, the least quiet audience is an Umphrey's audience. I had given up even trying to get an Umphrey's McGee recording because even when I am not recording there are times that I can't hear the band play over the audience chatter. It seems that a long of young people go to socialize, as opposed to most of the shows I go to where people actually go to see the band. Umphrey's doesn't play all that loud (compared to most bands I see), so the music doesn't overcome the chatty audience. I used to go to alot more Umphrey's shows, but am down to about one a year now because the audience makes it an unpleasant experience for me. I'm all for having fun at a show, but respect the others around you. Some people want to hear the music, and not what you have to say. Oh, and if you want to hear what this equipment is capable of when there is a respectful crowd, check out my 8/27/2008 Flower Kings recording also on the archive. Now that all that negative crap is out of the way, out of the five attempts I've made at recording Umphrey's, this is the best of the lot. I was fortunate to have quiet people sitting to my left, and my wife to my right. I think the assigned seating helped. This was recorded from the 8th row. There is still audience noise, but only in a couple spots is it that distracting. (Still, more noise than most concerts I go to.) I sampled a different recording from this show recorded with 8ft stands, and it still has similar audience noise. This was "In The Round", and this was the first time that Umphrey's played that kind of setup. It's a cool way to see the band. Sound is good, but I've never been too big a fan of the acoustics inside tents. I did the Yes/Asia show last summer at South Shore Music Circus (which has an identical setup), and the acoustics weren't the best there either. But it was a fun show and a very energetic setlist.
