Original master recording: Sony ECM-959 M/S stereo mic (in wide 120 degree setting) -> Denon DTR-80p (DAT master @ 16/48) DAT playback: Sony R-500 -> Sound Devices 722 digital input (@24/48) Mastered: Soundforge Pro 10.0c - *All file manipulation in Soundforge done at 24 bits*. Applied slight volume normalization. Sample rate conversion 48khz to 44.1khz using iZotope 64-Bit SRC set higher than "Highest Quality" setting w/anti-alias filter. Then dithered to 16 bits using using iZotope MBIT+ with Ultra noise shaping, with high dither settings. Tracked in CDWav.

NOTE There is a digital glitch in Track 8 at 1:50.65. I made numerous attempts to get a clean play out of this track, but was unable to. Taper Notes: ....almost finished with my deep dive into my Tiny Lights DAT recordings. BARN108 presents from what I can recall, my very first time going to the Mercury Lounge. Frankly I have no recollection of this show at all, but I'm glad I have this recording to help me remember! First of all, I have to comment about how good this one sounds. I think the recording quality rivals the Wetlands recordings I've previously posted of Tiny Lights. One thing that's really cool is the stereo imaging, with guitar panned to the left and the bass panned to the right. Setlist-wise, this is relatively typical for the time -- the standard (for this time period) set with "Miss Hose", "Circle Sky", "Curly Eyed Open Stare", "Lit By The Sun", and "I Don't Enjoy Life"...augmented by a beautiful oldie "Before You Go", the twisted tune "Horsehead" from their unreleased album, and the amazing "Sugar" which veers from beautiful and melodic to totally rockin' and back again. Some highlights of some of the songs: "Curly Eyed" is a very Beatle-esque version that is a showcase for John's great guitar tones/technique. "Before You Go" w/Andy on tablas and sax = AWESOME -- John does some very tasty guitar picking on this. Lit By The Sun has a nice warm, fat bassline from Dave. Horsehead starts out slow and picks up tempo until it hits a near metal speed. It has BIG drums from Andy...you can really hear how good his drums sounded...."I Don't Enjoy Life" has a low-fi garage-rock feel. Donna gets a great distorted violin solo in "The Bridge" which explores a lot of varied ground (including some distinctly Zeppelin-esque themes) in its jams. "Sugar" is a very deep cut that is really beautiful here that is a quintessentially Tiny Lights sounding song....subtle but pretty harmonies eventually breaking down to a march time at the end, to close the show.
