Sony ECM-959 -> Denon DTR-80p (master @ 16/48) DAT playback: Sony R-500 -> Sound Devices 722 digital input (@24/48); Mastered: Soundforge Pro 10.0c - *All file manipulation in Soundforge done at 24 bits*. Applied slight volume normalization, some minor clap removal and trying to minimize some of the sounds of my mic getting knocked around by rolling off the deep bass in some subsecond sections of this recording. Sample rate conversion 48khz to 44.1khz using iZotope 64-Bit SRC set higher than "Highest Quality" setting w/anti-alias filter. Then dithered to 16 bits using using iZotope MBIT+ with Ultra noise shaping, with high dither settings. Tracked in CDWav.

View Notes* = w/Dave Dreiwitz on trumpet, Andy Demos on sax Technical Notes: There was some oddness with my microphone in the 1st song -- you can hear it jiggling around a bit in the beginning and the resulting wave looked a little strange, but 17 1/2 years later I cannot recall what it was. Anyway, I did my best in fixing it -- it's not too bad but don't judge the rest of the recording by it as it is not representative of the quality of the rest of the show. Also about 2:27 into the 1st track, it sounds as if someone knocked into my mic stand. After the 1st tune I paused the deck, made some adjustments, and then started it again without missing any music. I spliced this edit together so it's mostly unnoticeable except for the sound improves a bit starting with the 2nd song. :) You can clearly hear the drums and bass mostly in the left channel and the guitar, violin, and vocals mostly in the right. I was so close that you can hear John's foot stomping out the count into Circle Sky Unfortunately (but hilariously) you can hear someone make their drink order of "2, no 3 glasses of red wine" a few minutes into "The Bridge". Also about 4 minutes into this track Phish fans may hear a jam that sounds a little reminiscent of "Chalkdust Torture"..you can also hear a little conversation (in stereo) between the same girls that the woman sitting across from Jesse is his mom and is "like a soap opera star or something" I spent a few extra hours mastering this recording -- because due to my proximity to the drums Andy's snare was on some songs the loudest instrument in the mix by far. I actually reduced the volume of each and every snare hit by hand to rein it in for much better listening. I believe that this was mostly problematic in "Pushin' The Button" and "Bartholomew". Taper notes: Continuing my own personal mini Tiny Lights flood with BARN103, and somehow once again relating Tiny Lights to Jeff Buckley, this show was recorded at Club Sine', a now-gone venue that used to be located right on St. Mark's Place. It was a very intimate coffee-shop-like place. Seated tables for maybe 50-75 folks, and a very small stage (and apparently no cover charge -- just a "pass the bucket" for donations to the band) made for an intimate evening for the audience and performers alike. The only reason this venue really has any place in history is that this is the venue where Jeff Buckley really made his name, and subsequently his record label recorded him performing a few shows here, and released a few tracks as a little EP before booking him for studio sessions to record his actual debut album. This show, despite being smack dab between the Wetlands 1/5/94 and Lion's Den 2/18/94 shows, is very different from either of them. Perhaps it was due to the intimacy of the venue and the fact that the other 2 venues were much more "rock clubs" with big PA systems, monitors, etc.? While the other shows opened with freeform improvs, this opens with the beautiful, tender "Blue Dot Cleanser" (unfortunately slightly marred by some equipment problems I was having), followed up by the standard "I Don't Enjoy Life" which they seem to have played at every show around this time, but then comes some interesting stuff -- "I Think I Just Want To Go Away" a very subtle song that is the A Side to a non-album vinyl single they had released around this time (interestingly enough, they played the B Side "Pull It Together" at the Lion's Den a couple of weeks later, both of which I have don't believe I heard live any other time. Next up is another rare slow and funky version of "Pushin' The Button" which really spotlights Dave's bass playing. "Country Song" is always welcome, followed by the standard (for the time -- this seemed to be in every setlist back then) Circle Sky. But up next is the (FINALLY) welcome duo of 2 classic Tiny Lights tunes "Bartholomew" (a song I LOVE) from the Hot Chocolate Massage album and hasn't appeared on any of the recordings posted to archive previously(!!), and the wonderful "Around It Goes Around" from Hazel's Wreath. Excellent! And then just as quickly as it started, they band announces they're going to pass the bucket and play one more -- "The Bridge" which is great and one of their standard set-closers from the time-period (seemingly rotating the slot with "Red Planet"). 38 minutes and out! A fun, intimate, different, show. As always, I wish it could have lasted longer. The next TL show I pick up for the BARN series will be a much more meaty (i.e. longer) affair. Also note that I found 3 more Tiny Lights DATs in my collection, so there are 4 more shows to go in my Tiny Lights flood. :) But for fans of my BARN series who are not Tiny Lights fans (and WHY OH WHY aren't you???!), I will be taking a little break from the Tiny Lights shows for my next few BARN series releases and let some other stuff make its way out from the BARN. An interesting footnote was that I recorded this show on the same DAT tape as the 1/5/94 show from the Wetlands. Enjoy!
