Sony ECM-959 (120 degree/"wide" setting) -> Denon DTR-80p (master @ 16/48) DAT playback: Sony R-500 -> Sound Devices 722 digital input (@24/48) Mastered: Soundforge Pro 10.0c - *All file manipulation in Soundforge done at 24 bits*. Applied slight volume normalization, some minor clap removal, and EQ-ing out 2 bursts of feedback. Sample rate conversion 48khz to 44.1khz using iZotope 64-Bit SRC set higher than "Highest Quality" setting w/anti-alias filter. Then dithered to 16 bits using using iZotope MBIT+ with Ultra noise shaping, with high dither settings. Tracked in CDWav.
Taper Notes:
View NotesSpeed The Plow opened * = There were 2 short loud bursts of feedback from the cello monitor during this song which I have minimized with a notch EQ. Though I can't restore the music lost during these bursts, the feedback itself is mostly inaudbile ^ = vocals missing at the start of this song. I suspect the house soundguy muted them to minimize the chance of feedback during the violin solo but didn't get them back on in time + = opening section w/Andy on sax, Donna on drums, Dave on trumpet; w/"Whole Lotta Love" jam This is a set from just before the release of "Milky Juicy" so is heavy on material from that album. And even more rare are opportunities for anyone to hear what their live shows were like. After recently reminiscing with Dave Dreiwitz (their former bassist) about Tiny Lights, I decided it was time rectify this situation. I am psyched to get a bunch of their live stuff I've recorded up here on their archive, and I believe there will soon be contributions by other Tiny Lights tapers as well. Hence this is BARN93, and the inaugural entry into Tiny Lights' live archive. I was first introduced to Tiny Lights by some of my college roommates (thanks, Jeff Kolber) and got to see them often when they played our student centers, some outdoor shows on campus, and the Court Tavern in New Brunswick (when I could sneak in, as it was a 21+ only music venue). They were mostly known locally in New Jersey, being based out of Hoboken, and released a small slew of albums, but never seemed to make it big outside of the local area. Quite unlike most of the jamband music I tend to post, these guys mixed jangly folk-pop with some free-jazz esthetic and even a bit of Sonic Youth-like experimental rock, incorporating cello, electric violin and sometimes tablas into the standard guitar/bass/drums rock & roll lineup (some of the members doubled up on horns occasionally too). They could write very catchy songs and they could rock out, or "feed your head" with free jazz or psychedelia. Though I believe that they disbanded sometime around 1995, some of the former members have gone onto bigger/better things -- Dave Dreiwitz is now the full time bass player for Ween. Jane Scarpatoni, their original cellist had departed by the time of this gig, where the cello chair was filled by (I believe) Stewart Hake, has gone onto the greatest success -- having played with the Indigo Girls, 10,000 Maniacs, Crash Test Dummies, Sheryl Crow, Ben Folds Five, Mike Doughty, Ray LaMontagne, Lou Reed, R.E.M., Bruce Springsteen, Freedy Johnston, and Suzanne Vega just to name a few. John Hamilton, the main songwriter/guitarist (along with his wife Donna Croughn) has gone on to find his own non-musical success as the chair of the Comparative Literature department at Harvard University. This show is from pretty late in their career, long after what people consider to be their seminal album releases, but they were still making great music in the live setting & playing songs that covered their entire career. Just listen to the beautiful opening jam and how it segues into the jangly (and easy to sing along to) "Moonwhite Day" with its lush imagery and I think you'll be sold. Other favorites are the cutesy "Miss Hose", a just-for-the-fun-of-it "Spinning", the string-enhanced and moody "Sweet Romance", "Country Song" (which manages to be indie-sounding, sing-along catchy and jammed out at the same time), and the very very offbeat "Horsehead" that is a near-punk song. "Curly-Eyed Open Stare" is rocker which gives way to a quiet electric violin solo that builds up from almost a whisper (thank goodness the crowd at Wetlands was unusually silent on this night). "Pushin' The Button" makes for a little bit of a funk workout (thanks to Dave Dreiwitz), and then we get a bit experimental for "Ashtray". Closing up, the band switches up instruments a bit for a jazz intro to the closing hard rockin' "The Bridge". NICE! I have about 10 other Tiny Lights sets pending, all of which I'm in the process of transferring from my DATs. I've also got a number of older (pre-'93) more "classic" Tiny Lights shows on cassette which I will look to dig out and transfer eventually (and they probably won't sound as good either). Enjoy!
