WAYWORD SONS Gregg Andrulis: grand piano, vocals Anders Beck: dobro, vocals Benny Galloway: upright bass, vocals Pete Kartsounes: acoustic guitar, vocals THE STORY It all began with Benny Galloway and our son John (age 11) sitting off to one side at the pig roast that concludes each year's NorthWest String Summit. As soon as their little bull session broke up John came running over and said, "Dad, the Wayword Sons are going to play a show in Great Falls!" As the one and only guy behind Stone Soup Productions, I had to say this was the first I'd heard of it but it sounded like a darned good idea. Amazingly, it only took 4 months to become a reality. The setting was the 101-year old congregation that my wife and I serve here in Great Falls: big arched stained-glass windows, lots of highly polished well-aged oak, some of the the sweetest room acoustics you could ask for, and a "stage" that consisted of the slightly raised chancel area where the band set up. Burle was on the far left side on a stool, Pete was next to him, then Anders, and Gregg was over on the far right behind the church's baby grand piano. His traveling keyboard was set up right next to him but he never played on a note on anything but the baby grand all night long. At one point Anders even quietly tried to get him to switch to the keyboard for a song or two, but Gregg just quietly said, "I only get 6 more songs on this grand piano, so forget it." Like I said in the intro, sometimes it's hard to get a band to travel to Montana in the winter months so we were doubly appreciative of this chance to hear Wayword Sons on the 2007 January Powder Tour. This was a very intimate and personal show, the kind of thing that happens when friends get together and hang out (which we certainly did over the next two days) only this intimate soiree was played in front of an appreciative crowd of about 130 people. As the recording shows, the band clearly had a Real Good Time, as did the audience. By the way, Stone Soup Productions is my not-for-profit community arts venture that brings in great acoustic bands to Great Falls, lets them play before an appreciative sit-down audience, and makes sure they get a good wage since we only cover our production costs.
