View NotesOn 2021-08-06, after nearly a year and a half of abstention, the Mountain Goats - a prolific touring band, returned to the stage in front of a live audience at The Orange Peel. It is one of my favorite captures; the reaction to "Hi, we're the Mountain Goats!" is very special. Now, on 2022-09-22, at the same venue, the Mountain Goats concluded their longest tour ever as a quartet. I am similarly proud of this capture - All of the elements came together wonderfully. I really enjoy multiple listens focusing on different aspects of the performance, just as I do when I shift my focus between different band members in person. Everyone here - from those on stage to their crew, are really something great. I must say, The Orange Peel is one of the most remarkably comfortable venues I have ever attended as an audience member. Wide stage with great sight lines, plenty of small speakers along the stage to give the front row a solid listening experience (vocals!), and an incredible HVAC system piping in cool air from below the stage. The HVAC system may be heard on some of the quieter tracks, but I don't find it too detrimental from a listening perspective. Captured with typical healy-rig-on-left-side-of-stage-between-Matt-and-John's-amps + SBD matrix technique. Always nice doing it at a venue where I can be reasonably certain that it'll sound nice.
