SBD + Audience Matrix -> DAT
Lineage:
Original master recording: SBD + Sony ECM-959 (+ Scheops (CMC-54?) -- for late show only, I think) -> Mackie 1202 mixer -> Denon DTR-80p (master @ 16/48) DAT playback: Sony R-500 -> Sound Devices 722 digital input (@24/48) Mastering: Soundforge Pro 10.0c - *All file manipulation in Soundforge done at 24 bits*. Applied volume normalization, sample rate conversion 48khz to 44.1khz using iZotope 64-Bit SRC set higher than "Highest Quality" setting w/anti-alias filter. Then dithered to 16 bits using using iZotope MBIT+ with Ultra noise shaping, with high dither settings, EQ-ing out some feedback, and some minor clap scrubbing. Tracked in CDWav.
Taper Notes:
View Notes^ = sound is pretty poor and in mono for the first 1 min 20 sec of this track and intro due to a loose connection on the input to my DAT recorder % = has non-standard lyrics * = w/Arnie Lawrence on saxophone # = w/"Hound Dog" lyrics interpolation - EQ'd out feedback from early set: T2,3,5,14; late show S1: T6; late show S2: T3, T5, T11, T13 - There is some occasional crackling in the late show 2nd set, which sounds like it's due to a bad cable on the vocal mic. Early show was a private benefit for PS 116 and was limited in attendance to schoolkids and their parents. Note that the late show is already posted on archive.org, but this version should supplant that one, as I've done some minor remastering (fixing some volume level fluctuations) and filtering of a whole lot of isolated feedback from the stage. Chris Barron - vocals Aaron Comess - drums Mark White - bass Anthony Krizan - guitar Taper notes: For BARN122, I present an interesting curiosity of a Spin Doctors show. Frankly I've been wanting to -- and I've had requests for putting out some Spin Doctors in the BARN series for a long time (though I have released some Chris Barron solo shows in the past). I mean I have taped these guys SO MANY times over the years...and I still love 'em -- they were the second jamband that I really connected with after Blues Traveler, and I think I connected with them even more. Yes, some of you may remember them for the hits, and short poppy songs, but they were really much more than their hits and had some tunes that really really jammed. Anyway, the "classic" Spin Doctors period was like 1989/1990 through maybe 1993, when the band was really firing on all cylinders. Then the whole thing deflated when Eric Schenkman, their guitarist, unceremoniously quit the band in the middle of a tour! Well, they took some time to recompose and hired Anthony Krizan, who did a pretty good impersonation of Eric (he even sort of looked like him), and filled the slot pretty well -- they wrote a whole batch of new songs, did weekly runs at their old haunts (Wetlands, Nightingales) to break in the "new guy" and break out beyond their core material, take fan requests in a friendly setting, etc. So this show is particularly fun because you get to hear some fun banter with the parents/kids in the early show, in addition to getting most of their most popular material out of the way. Then for the late show, we get a bunch of new material -- some good ("You've Got To Believe In Something", "Marcy Of The Air", "Dogs On A Doe", "You Let Your Heart Go Too Fast"), some sublime ("More Than Meets The Ear"), and some less than good ("She Used To Be Mine" , "To Make Me Blue", "If Wishes Were Horses", "I Can't Believe You're Still With Her"), and others simply forgettable ("Out Of The Wool"). They also treated us to some awesome deep cuts that I will take any day of the week -- like "About A Train" (with alternate lyrics I'd forgotten about), "Scotch And Water Blues", "Sister Sisyphus", "Someday All This Will Be Road" (which someone in the audience had been yelling for all night), and a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Spanish Castle Magic"! 3 sets is a lot of music, so strap yourself in, it's going to be a long ride. :) Even after a very long night, the ravenous fans call the band back for 2 encore segments, and the band very appreciatively obliges Just to catch up, Anthony Krizan stayed with the band a little while, was replaced by Eran Tabib in 1997, when the band also added Ivan Neville as a full-time member, but they sort of petered out when Mark White left the band. These days the full original lineup is back together and performing infrequently (though they did just have a 20th anniversary of "Pocket Full Of Kryptonite" international tour), and the songs written during the period with the replacement guitarists have seemingly been erased from their collective memory -- the band neither plays them anymore, nor do the fans seem to want to hear them. This is a matrix recording I made, but it's a little rough at points. The first minute or so of the first song in the early show is barely listenable due to a mini-plug which was only 1/2 plugged into my recorder. Also, I was fiddling with the mix a bit....and then in the late show I add in the Scheops mics, when Eliot Byron arrived. The early show and the late show sound pretty different, but the mix show settles in about 2-3 songs into the late set, when I managed to nail the mix, I think. I also added a touch of EQ to the early show, as I think it needed it. Enjoy!
