View NotesSouthern Culture On The Skids 1999-05-07 Cotton Club Atlanta GA 1 hr 21 min I'd heard the name for years, but I'd never got around to checking them out. Then a friend laid Plastic Seat Sweat on me and from the first notes of Shotgun, I was hooked. Every tune was a revelation. This was a top shelf, first rate, timeless band. The tasty, skillful guitar of Rick Miller, the sweet vocals of Mary Huff, who gives me a special feeling when she sings, like Janis Joplin and PJ Harvey. Nothing like them, of course but the effect is the same. The sold backbeat of Dave Hartman. They are the only surf country funk rock band I know of. They take classic disparate American music genres and filter it through a genuine southern sensibility and grind it out, song after song, like there's no tomorrow. I love 'em. Of course, the first chance I had after I got a hold of that record, I went to see them and they did not disappoint. Soundboard snobs can move on to something else. My recordings are low-fi, but high fun. Not having the bread for digital equipment, I used my trusty analog Sony ProWalkman to capture the five shows I have and this is the first one. I missed the first tune, which was Shotgun and I think I missed a couple more at the end because I screwed up and only had one tape on me which ended during Meximelt. This show has a stellar King Of The Mountain, which has become my fave SCOTS tune. The invitations to dance onstage and the fried chicken routine blew my mind. What other band shows the love to the fans like this? This two night stand featured Cousin Crispy and damn I wish he was still with them. That keyboard really added a lot to the tunes. Played a pretty mean guitar, too. Speaking of guitar, the more I listen to Rick Miller, the more I realize he's one of the best players out there, in any genre. Hendrix, John McLaughlin, Jeff Beck, Ralph Towner and Rick Fuckin' Miller baby! Rick Miller - guitar, vocals Mary Huff - bass, vocals Dave Hartman - drums, vocals? Cousin Crispy (Chris Bess) - keyboard, guitar, percussion, vocals, good vibes
