Unfortunately, this year I was only able to make the last day but that is sure to change next year as I found it very well organized, not too far from where I live and something I'd like to attend again. For me, the main draw of this festival was Johnny Winter but as happens all too often at festivals, I found a few unexpected gems. I actually very much enjoyed all 4 bands (Kries, Johnny Winter, Dr. John & The Lower 911 & Sam Roberts) and got excellent or better captures of them all. By the time I walked into this festival, it had already been going for a few days and people were well established in their "tarped out areas" and lawnchairs. It had rained for the few days before so there was mud everywhere and it was quite a challenge finding an acoustically superior spot to make my recording. Somehow I squeezed and wiggled my way into a place right in front of the board. I was in full view of the soundmen and could see that the first show (Kries) was about to begin so I kept it major stealth (with my low profile CAFS omni mics) and quickly started recording all the while hunting down a discreet place to clamp my shock mounted CA-11 cards for the upcoming shows. I noticed right away that there was a scaffolding tressel holding up a light can right next to me. I knew that if I could somehow clamp on to it without either being seen or having my gear spotted I would be in recordist's heaven. Using all my ninja skills, I was able to clamp my rig in an almost perfect position for recording. For Johnny Winter, I got the clamp up 1.5 metres and for the last two shows (Dr. John & Sam Roberts) I got my clamp up to 2 metres. I was unable to get it higher due to the light that was on the scaffolding and the fact that I would certainly have been seen placing my mics if I had gone higher.
