Rasta Rafiki 1994-12-31 A.J. Palumbo Center Pittsburgh, PA Source: Master SBD Mastering: Yamaha KX-393 (cass)> 2 dbx 2031's (eq)> Avalon AD2044 (comp)> Tascam 2000 (cd) Conv: EAC> cdwav> Flac Rasta Rafiki opened for Rusted Root Rasta Rafiki pile out of the white bus that was our home for many years of road. Pittsburgh, A.J. Palumbo Center. For Duquesne College Basketball, I think. Spirits were high. We were playing the Nyabinghi later that night. Two New Years Shows. Everybody was happy. Everybody 'cept me that is. I had been running sound for Rasta Rafiki for about 10 minutes so I really had no idea how to mix except for the sound in my head. Tom persuaded me, "Everything will be fine". Sure. We load in and set up. I go back to the soundboard. I guess the guys back there were Union or something. They were notinterested in me. One guy pointed to a soundboard off to the side and said, "That's for you. Set it up however you want.", and promptly left. Great. No instructions, nothing. I got my sound levels while the monitor board crew got their stage levels which was Real Fast cause, once again, Union. That was it. A total of about 15 minutes and we were off the stage. About 5 minutes to showtime, after the annual attitude adjustment, I walk to the board through about 5,500 kids. Plenty of people, plenty of exitement. It's New Years Eve. Everybody was Happy! The lights go out. The stage lights come up on Rasta Rafiki. Woo Hoo!! Getting ready. Everybody starts screaming, The Boys start into the first song. And the rest is, as they say, History. We watched as Rusted Root started drumming and chanting and slowly walked through the backstage area and up on stage to start their show.We piled back into the bus and headed toward Morgantown and the Second show, listening to a live broadcast of Rusted Root on the radio (90.5fm of something like that). If you have the Root show off radio please contact me. This is still my most requested Rasta Rafiki Concert. Coppolasetic Sound Hey, I'm Andy and I'd like to add my POV to this. I remember the stage manager was like "You're on, get up there!" and we started in on the set list. With what seemed like nothing resembeling a sound check, just a line check. Nice big stage and hall and I couldn't hear anyone including myself on the nice big stage. I walked around as far as the cord would let me and found no improvement. Wound up watching Steve play his drums so I could see when his sticks fell to the drum and thereby be able to keep time, while hoping I was hitting the right notes to match. An awful experience. Thought the show musta sucked big time and hated it. Completely forgot that show within 2 months and put it off of my mind. Years went by... then Darrin puts a copy this in my hands. I'm blown away by how opposite this show sounds compared to the memory. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do now.
