View NotesThe beginning of the first track wasn't recorded -- in general the stuff in the High Sierra Music Hall starts RIGHT after the main stage ends, not leaving quite enough time to run over before the opening band starts. But I got in and running as quickly as possible. This was an opening set for Yonder Mountain String Band I believe I had to do a "battery flip" on my Apogee between T6 & T7 as there was a momentary gap in the recording (which I have closed up). I scrubbed a bunch of loud claps from T1(7 claps), T2(11 claps + 1 balloon pop), T4(18 claps), T5(3 claps) Recording, transfer (Nov 2011), mastering, tracking, tagging (3/3-8/2013) by Scott Bernstein Taper notes: Next up in my BARN series, I bring you a recording that was made in something very close to an actual barn, a very very early recording from New Jersey-based "newgrass"/folk band Railroad Earth. I have been seeing these guys for a long time, having been clued into them very early on -- after they emerged from the ashes of the band From Good Homes (who I'd been a fan of). They have a pretty rabid fan base and a pretty large taper community, so it appears that many of the shows that I have recorded of theirs in the past are already on archive.org (albeit, from alternative sources...). The challenge for me, in putting out the first RRE show in my archive series, was to dig up something old, interesting, and rare enough from the band that has NOT previously appeared on archive.org in any form. And this is what I came up with. This was a set from my first trip out to Quincy, CA for the best festival there is -- High Sierra Music Fest. The band had played a slot on the main stage at the festival the previous night....but this is a previously completely uncirculated recording of their late night set in the High Sierra Music Hall the following night, as an OPENER for Yonder Mountain String Band. One small thing to note is that the late night shows inside the Music Hall always start too quickly for the tapers to make it over from the main stage before the opening band starts -- so you'll note that the beginning of the first song is missing from this recording, despite my best efforts to make it over and get set up in time. The sound mix is never great inside the Music Hall for these sets, as it really is just a high-ceilinged barn, but my recording sounds very crisp and clear (except for some minor occasional distortion on the stand-up acoustic bass, which was clearly a problem with the PA mix, since it comes and goes at times -- it's nothing to be concerned about and shouldn't mess with your enjoyment of this show). The setlist is a good mix of their early originals ("Black Bear" in particular is paced very nicely and sets the mood nicely early in the set) and a superb cover on Gid Tanner & The Skillet Lickers' "Ragtime Annie Lee". So over 10 years later, this performance is finally freed from its DAT tape constraints for all the world to hear as BARN148. Hope you enjoy!
