View NotesHere is last night's Ragbirds show from Johnny D's in Somerville, Massachusetts. A short, one set show. I have been working the Regatta here in Boston as my company runs the concessions along both sides of the Charles River. After my 3rd very long day on next to no sleep (14 1/2 hours), it was about 8:55 and I called Randall from the band. He was surprised to hear my voice and said he was going on in 2 minutes. I said I will grab my gear and haul ass down there. I did, and got there at about 9:22. I was rolling tape at 9:24! I missed the first 2 songs. It was SO good to see my friends the Ragbirds perform. As tired as I was, I felt like a fish in water and nothing else mattered. When Erin walked up to the mic and said we have a friend who requests a certain song, and we usually don't play it, but we are going to tonight.... Wow, I got my Harvest. I can't thank these guys enough! Not a large crowd unfortunately as it was a Sunday night, but everyone there was groovin'. Been close to 10 months since my last Ragbirds show. Way too long in my opinion. I noticed some different arrangements on a couple of the tunes. Erin played lots of fiddle as well. I enjoyed hearing 2 new songs. I really liked The Bully, as it reminded me of Paul Simon's I Know Your Mother. Nice seeing Evan get up and jam on 2 songs instead of his customary one. As soon as the show was over, I got a huge hug from Erin. We chatted and she asked if I was in a hurry. I said I actually had to meet my boss and return a rental truck but it can wait. She said she had something she wanted to show me. She went out to the van and got her laptop. She pulled up the Album Art for the new CD coming out in January that SHE drew. It was basically 95 people, many of whom meant something special to her and the band. One of the people, ME! I was so touched and honored! She even drew in a mic stand! I knew several of the other folks she had drawn as well. Great catching up with randall and TJ as well. I was their original taper about 5 years ago. I never did tell this story. About 5 years ago or so, I was working in Toledo. It was a Saturday night and I finished work late in the afternoon. I was looking for a show to see and tape. I got on the computer and brought up The Ragbirds at the Espresso Royale in Ann Arbor. It said folk and world rhythms I think I recall. I said, done deal. I drove up route 23 into Michigan and stopped at Espresso Royale. The only person there was the coffee brewer smoking a cigarette at the front door. I asked where is the band and the fans. I got "Huh"? There were 2-3 Espresso Royales. She called and found out it was Main Street Ann Arbor. So, I rushed over and it was a block from The Ark in Downtown Ann Arbor. I walked thru people buying coffee and set up in an overstuffed chair, about 6-8' from the stage as the band was setting up. They kinda looked at me but said nothing. well, I really liked what I heard that night and started coming out to any of their area shows to tape. We became friends and the rest is history. I feel a very special relationship to them, and boy was it a warm feeling hearing them here last night! Late night eats after the show, was a stop to Red House for Pork Foo Young, Pork Fried Rice, Boneless Spare Ribs, and Pork Tenderloin. Yummy!
