The band had been together for more than 30 years (I first heard them in a concert broadcast on WNEW-FM here in NYC in 1988, when I was still in High School!), and while not every show in recent years was brilliant, I did manage to see a few excellent ones in my time and had a great time at many of them. Consider the next 3 BARN installments -- BARN93 through BARN95 my tribute to the Radz' Fish Head music. First off, I'm presenting this show from Irving Plaza (probably the place that I saw them the most) from the first night of their typical (for the time) 3 night weekend run in NYC. This show featured Merl Saunders and the Rainforest Band opening, which for some unexplained reason meant that the Radiators only got to play one long set instead of 2 shorter ones. For anyone who collects/listens to Radiators recordings, you'll know that most tapers (including myself) usually just opted for the easy route and patched out the soundboard feed that Kenny, their front-of-house sound mixer offered. On this particular night I was concerned that Merl would not allow soundboard patches for his opening set....so I brought out my full rig including mics and set them up in my usual FOB sweet spot in Irving Plaza and made this really warm, crisp audience recording. This recording is mostly notable because: 1. It is not currently in circulation on archive.org; 2. There is a Merl Saunders sit-in, which is a nice bonus; and 3. It so obviously displays the benefits of an audience recording over a soundboard recording. What is so much better about the audience recording? Well, if you're any sort of fan of Reggie Scanlan's bass playing, or Camille Boudoin's guitar playing, both loud and clear on this recording, much like it was in the house mix at most venues (due to the volume of their amps onstage). Also, the vocals and drum effects do not dominate this recording, as they tend to on the soundboard recordings. What's also cool is you can hear the audience react to particularly interesting things....stuff the band says, and even a few call-and-response singalongs (I believe we get a little of this in Little Sadie). This recording really reflects what it sounded like in the room that night, which was excellent! In terms of performance, this is a solid show (for the first of a 3 night run) -- a can't miss warm-up opening combo of Nightmare > Dead Ass (Radiators covering P-Funk is a pretty winning combo), a BUNCH of old time Radiators' classics -- Let's Radiate, In The Mood To Move, Straight 8, Law of The Fish, #2 Pencil, Love Is A Tangle...all before finding their way into a sweet take on a couple of covers -- the Allman Brothers' Jessica & Back At The Chicken Shack. Then Merl Saunders joins for a few classics and winding it up with the crowd-pleasing Little Sadie. VERY SOLID, and a great example of what The Radiators could do on a good night. To quote one of the songs from this show "Let's Radiate!" Enjoy!
