This one is, unlike the previous Irving show I'd posted (from 10/8/98), a soundboard recording, as I'd patched out of Eric Vandercar's super high-end Apogee A>D converter. The difference will be night-and-day in terms of the sound quality of the recording -- yes, it's very crisp, yes the vocals are clear and easy to understand, and the keys are very present. But the drums are WAY loud in the mix, and the bass and Camille's guitar both buried. Why this show? Well I decided to break this one out because even though I'd seen them a few times before and had enjoyed hearing them on the radio since the late 80s, this is the first time I really "got it" where from start to finish the band just grabbed me and I felt like they could do no wrong. Literally bursting out of the gate with the awesome medley built into "Can't Take It With You When You're Gone" including "Grow Fins" and "Land of 1,000 Dances", the band is announcing loud and clear that they have COME TO PLAY and will not be phoning-it-in. Following up with some NOLA themed voodoo gumbo tunes ("...Dragon's Blood" and "...Devil's Dream"), a few catchy oldies/fan favorites ("Honey...", "Doctor Doctor" [always a lock for and a hit in NYC with the "...and a ticket to New York!" line], and "Last Getaway"), a killer "Law Of The Fish", and a raise-the-bar "#2 Pencil" the band was on fire. The set-closing "Papaya" proves that this band could take the music out there into psychedelic territory with the best of 'em for a long and tasty jam. 2nd set features more fan favorites/sing-alongs like "Like Dreamers Do", "Hard Rock Kid" (featuring, as always, a built-in rundown of their current tour stops if you listen closely), and "River Run". Then a super sweet run of cover tunes -- The Meters' "Look Ka Py Py" with Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth" excellently but incongruously sandwiched inside, one of their best all-time covers (maybe after "Spanish Moon") the Rolling Stones' "Dead Flowers" with "Pressure Drop" sandwiched inside of it, and a ROCKIN' set closing "Nasty Boogie Woogie". EXCELLENT. Continuing their very very cover-heavy show, we get The Beatles' "I've Got A Feeling" followed by The Band's "The Weight" (who DOESN'T cover that?), and lastly Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower. Great stuff. And if you're not hooked by the end of this one, you'll never like this band.... Enjoy!
