* = song fades in Note that it takes a couple of songs for the FOH engineer to get the sound balanced properly -- in particular the vocals are a little buried in the beginning. Private party sponsored by Guinness beer, opening for Deep Banana Blackout Recorded, transferred (6/12/2012), tracked (1/21/2020), mastered (1/23/2020), and posted (1/25/2020) by Scott Bernstein Taper notes: For BARN208, I present to you a show that I really have no recollection of, of a band I really have no recollection of, unfortunately. Looking back at the history of the Pat McGee Band, clearly they are a southern based band that I apparently only saw and taped this one time. From the between song banter on the recording I can deduce that this was a private gig, sponsored by Guinness beer; and Pat McGee Band were the openers for Deep Banana Blackout -- who I was there to see (Deep Banana had also had normal non-private headlining gig there the following night). Typically if I were there early enough, I'd tape the opening band, so clearly I did on this night. This is a good set, and it gets better as it goes on. Introduced as John Small, the bassist in the band is particulary impressive (I heard some decent slapping going on!). Their cover of Crosby Stills and Nash's "Southern Cross" is REALLY tight and a joy to hear. I believe I transferred this recording because it was on a DAT tape that was shared with a set of Josh Rouse opening for Cowboy Junkies exactly a month later and I was curious to hear what Josh sounded like way back then so this set "came along for the ride". This set required almost no work, so I was able to get it up quickly after I did the tracking. For all of you Pat McGee Band fans, I hope you enjoy this recording and that it helps to fill in a gap in the historical record! Enjoy!
