Taper Notes:
View NotesThis source is the same as the historic recordings of the Grateful Dead on the same dates (08-05-71 & 08-06-71), and is considered among some of the very best live audience recordings of the early 1970's. There are no soundboard recordings circulating for these shows. A particularly good show, 08-06-71 features some fantastic slide work from Jerry Garcia. He roars and he soars. The band is firing on all cylinders. A first SHN set of this recording was made in January, 2002. Recently (Nov. 2003), the missing Honky Tonk Women was found and added to the set. It was taken from an AUDMR>?>R source. Cross faded in at 03:22 of d2t09 (Sweet Lovin' One). John Dawson - rhythm guitar, vocals David Nelson - lead guitar, vocals David Torbert - bass, vocals Jerry Garcia - pedal steel guitar Spencer Dryden - drums

Should be MAR>R>R. However, Jerry Moore's, Bob Menke's and Barry Glassberg's collections do include MAR>R (7.5 ips Dolby B) versions. --In addition to having the extra reel generation, these copies were made several years earlier than Jerry's, Bob's and Barry's copies, on inferior taping equipment (Don's and Will's, Sony 645 and 770, the others two Sony 755's), and probably inferior tape as well (Scotch 203 vs. Maxell UD). I'm just saying if you want to make new, not from masters transfers, it would make more sense to get one of those 3 reel sets I mentioned. kboomatt comment (2010-08-19): --The tape stock used for these are as follows: --------New Riders and part of the 8-5-71: TDK 1800 super dynamic tape @ 7.5 ips.. --------GD: Maxell UD tape @ 7.5 ips. --I strongly suggest to give these a good listen before automatically passing judgement with these in particular based purely on lineage. The tapes (as with just about all of Will's stuff) are still in excellent condition and play a huge role these days in a good transfer. Sure, it would be great to see the master transferred, but I seriously doubt that's going to happen anytime soon. It also makes a HUGE difference who is going to do it as to the best representation of doing the cleanest transfer possible and not letting one's ego get in the way by pitch correction, EQ, etc. etc. etc.. I take an immense amount of pride in my audio work (it's really a hobby!!) and am not going to put out something unless I feel it's the best sounding version out there and the people who deal with me respect that fact so play this on a decent system and you'll hear the incredible highs and fat lows with this one. vg NOTES (2026-04-10): --Mega Thanks to Harvey Kaslow & Craig Todd for recording & sharing this New Riders Of the Purple Sage 1971 show & to Dan Wolfe & Matt Smith for the Reel transfers & to Jamie Waddell & GEMS for the editing & mastering of this & then sharing it out far & wide for us all to enjoy. Absolutely Appreciated all around!! --this was the opening act for the Grateful Dead performance on this date; the lineup was (from start to finish): the Rowan Brothers; New Riders Of the Purple Sage; Grateful Dead --this New Riders Of the Purple Sage set from this show was separated from the GD portion of shnid=109430 so that it could live in the New Riders Of the Purple Sage collection on LMA --tickets for this show were $5.00 (advance); $5.50 (at the door) --show was presented by Pinnacle --https://jerrygarcia.com/show/1971-08-06-hollywood-palladium-hollywood-ca-usa/ --I added the band members info --corrected some song titles toward how they appear on the original albums...in the case of any covers of other artists' tunes, I deferred to how New Riders Of the Purple Sage first listed them on their release, etc. --added more detail to the setlist info & venue info --this venue opened on 1940-10-29 (jerrygarciasbrokendownpalaces says it was 1940-09-23)...it was built by film producer Maurice M.Cohen, funded by Los Angeles Times publisher Norman Chandler & designed by Gordon Kaufmann, architect of the Greystone Mansion, the Los Angeles Times Building, the Santa Anita Racetrack in Arcadia, the Hoover Dam & early Caltech dorms...the performance on opening night (1940-10-29, if we are going with that being the correct opening night [see included poster]) was Tommy Dorsey & His Orchestra w/ band vocalist Frank Sinatra...it is also known as "Hollywood Palladium Los Angeles"; "The Palladium"; --https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_Palladium --https://www.hollywoodpalladium.com/ --https://jerrygarciasbrokendownpalaces.blogspot.com/2012/01/hollywood-palladium-6215-sunset-blvd.html --added pics of the venue & posters for the event
